After driving round with what sounded like a dodgy turbo on my polo, a very odd rattling noise always at 2000 rpm, i've been told that the catalytic converter is the problem.

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar noise, but a different diagnosis? According to a friend a catalytic converter can be seriously expensive, he payed £800 for his. If it is the converter can i expect to be paying this much for a new one?

Mine makes a slight rattling noise at just over 2k revs, but I'm sure mines just a rattley heat shield somewhere.

Well £800 For A cat, I think not mate, you would be cheaper buying a banger of a polo and using that, there Round bout £200 - £250 Mark Depending on make and where you get it, there will also be a surcharge as they take your old one off you to make a new one outta it ! So if you dont hand it over when buying one, you get a surcharge, but get that back when you hand in the old Cat! But £800 Is Not gonna Cost You !

Thanks a lot guys, you've calmed my nerves down a bit, my mate just told me he also had a lot of parts to replace when he put it in for a service, the catalytic converter being one of them. Either that or he got rinsed of £800

The garage is still trying to find one for me, guess it'll be fixed for something around the price daz got it done. Hope you get your noise sorted out steveB, it bugs the hell out of me lol.

So do they take my cat, and use it to build a new one? Like mould the new one from the old one? Sorry i dont quite get the jist of it, does that mean they take my new one away, otherwise i have to put a deposit down, which i get back when i fit the new one?

Off topic: That is a fit! colour on your polo by the way, rims are buff as well.

Interesting fact: catalytic converters contain platinum. You can sell a single catalytic converter for anywhere between 50 and 150 pounds at certain precious metal scrappies.

Sorry i know someone who is a bit of a pike lol.

Nah they dont make a mould of yours, what i mean is that say said cat cost £250, a percentage of this will be a surcharge, ie Maybe £20 I dont know the exact amounts, and if you dont give them your cat when you buy a new one it will be £250, but when you take your old cat in to claim the surcharge back you'll get the £20 back, As i said i dont know the exact prices, they are just an example,

The Reason they take the Old Ones off you is because the get Recycled and made into knew Ones, So the One You Buy May Infact be a Recycled one, Its How it all works Mate, Same With Engine Starters and things,

hey really sorry to come bac with suc a similar question, but just wondering whether you were sold a refurbed one daz? Or was it new?
Do you know if it makes a difference whether its new or refurbished?

It Dont matter If Its Refurbed or New, Most of Them Will Be Refurbed Mate ! You cant tell the Difference,
