My mothers 2003 9n 1.9 tdi sport has stopped selecting reverse, 1st and 2nd.

You can get 3rd 4th and 5th the gear stick wont move to the left at all! Forward and back is ok and right but not left, I have looked at the cables that select the gears and they seem fine.
Any ideas????

definitely sounds like a selector problem, shouldn't be too tricky to fix. can't be clutch because no gears would work!

hi pal i had this problem with a golf at work you havent had any work done on the exhaust have you? on the golfs the front pipe is a bit of a task to change and after fitting i had no first or 2nd gears (like a brick wall) when i got it back on the ramp and look i had bent the heat shild and the selector rod was hitting it thus giving the brick wall effect moved it and everything was fine worth a look if not must be somthing alot more serious

Managed to fix it.
Some 2s and 1s had fell down the side of the ashtray

and was stopping the rods from moving just lifted the gator up and eventually got them out.
Now it works fine.
Thanks for your replys.
Another question i have just serviced it my self and reset the computer like it says to in the manual and now when you press it to see when the next service is, it just has ( - - - - ) before it had ( -9999) My grandfarthers say 7k till next service. Just thought it would say how long.
PS its long life servicing. The oil is dear
Thanks

it stays blank for a while, then comes up with a figure.
however, I did the same, and now my service light comes on every 1k. keep me posted if yours does the same!
