hi all

just a quick one really the gearbox blew on my 1.6glx recently and i've been struggling to find a replacment. A garage phoned me today and they have a box from a 1.4, i've been down to have a look and it looks identical so i was just wondering whether it would work ok or if they are completly different inside?

cheers

id imagine it will fit with ease.

If you rag it it could be weaker i guess. Thats even if theyre different. Something tells me they are probably the same as the engines arent much different power wise.

yeah thats what i'm thinking. the thing i'm really worried about is whether or not the gear ratios gonna be completly different.

If anything i would imagine theyd be shorter... meaning you would lose top end but gain in acceleration.

Though i sincerely dounbt there is any real difference at all for some reason. I dont see why they would change the ratios for an engine thats only got like 20 more bhp. Its more but its not alot more like...

I think the ratios will be different but not by much - the 16v ratios are very different to the 8v ones that's for sure.

it'll be easily strong enough IMO.

yeh id like to know more about gear ratios acrually. Does anybody actually have a clue what they are? Lol. All i know is shorter ratios mean better acceleration. Grand Turismo taught em that much

I think it did anyway...

LOL

get someone with a 1.4 to post there 70mph rpm in 5th, and compare it to a 1.6 rpm.

3000rpm as i though.

Way i see it is you dont have much to loose by putting a 1.4 gearbox on a 1.6. Its a Volkswagen so the gearbox is gonna be made of raw manliness anyway lol (well pre '98 anyway... think it was '98 they became chocolate...)

If there are shorter ratios your just gonna accelerate better... so... just do it? lol.

But to confirm i was hitting 70mph at 3000rpm. To the dot in fact.

Id like to add that my car is pretty damn quick for a 1.4. It beats most other 8 valve polos that i have come across... so i do wonder if maybe i have a different gearbox on lol. Maybe a 1.3 or a 1.0L or something. If they ahve shorter ratios, which im certain they should then itd make me quicker. Would also explain why my gearbox is showing early signs of breaking as i drive hard. Damn hard. Sometimes..
