Got the cambelts, and tensioners changed car has only done 28000 miles but is 7 years old so got it done, £120 for the parts and £70 to fit, not bad as the vag stealer wanted £341 to do it
car feels alot better now, but not the wallet
i did the belt on my mk2 golf gti myself £15 all in, newer cars are great but hard on the wallet

I've just picked up a belt to have mine done (I wont be attempting it myself as have no idea on them)

Did you do your water pump too? VW didnt advise me i should do that too.. but i see alot of people on here have done, so im going to get one aswell

I wonder why they are replaced? do you have to remove them to get to the belt? im not doing mine, but dont know if i need to get a pump or not.

Best to get the water pump changed as the same time as the cambelt as is suppose to cause more strain on the water pump not sure though

hi there, water pumps are renowned for leaking. they leak onto the cam belt and you then end up changing everything again . been there with a mk4 polo! not pleasant. really would recommend it. i'm supprised vw didnt?

it cost me about £60-80 for the full gti cam tensioner and belt kit from gsf and the water pump i think was about £20 with discount...
Its a pretty tough job to do with the engine still in the bay tbh...so not surprised on hefty labour costs.
I was lucky in the fact my engine was out so it was a 40min job.
I'd definately change the water pump because the OE one uses a plastic impeller wheel inside the engine, and the replacement from GSF uses a metal one which won't break down and block your water ways causing the engine to overheat...just like on 20vt's.

I had heard this before about the plastic ones breaking.. so instead of vw, GSF are better for this.

Thenks guys.. my friend said the same thing about his mk4 golf and getting it from GSF as its metal as his oe one broke on the way to inters.. he wasnt happy!

Will get on the phone to GSF today.. hope i get the right one!
