Ok lads, time for another round of name that connector...
On the DRIVERS SIDE we have:
Connector 1-on the same bit of loom as the outside air temp sensors (yellow/brown and brown)
Connector 2-Short 3 pin connector (black, red/white and brown)
PASSENGER SIDE:
Connector 1- Comes off the engine harness (same loom as the connectors down near the gearbox)-
Colours of wire:
brown/red,
red/white,
green/brown,
green/grey,
blue/green,
green.
NO PIC OF THE ABOVE...SORRY.
Connector 2- Big Connector near the grounding point behind the headlamp:
Wire colours:
Thick Red,
Thick Red/Yellow,
Thick Red/Blue,
Thick Red/White.
Connector 3- (10 pin connector located on the same wiring loom as the thick big connector above).
Wire colours:
Red/White,
Red,
Brown,
Blue,
Green/Black,
White/Black,
Grey/Green,
Green,
Red/Black,
Black.
ODD CUT WIRES: (yellow/black and brown/black x2)
(Same loom as the ground location wires behind the headlight)
ODD RUBBER INSULATED 2 PIN CONNECTORS EITHER SIDE OF THE CAR:
Who can help me?

thanks in advance!

The 4 pin connector with the thick wires, should go to the radiator fan IIRC, or somehwere around that area.
Connector 2 short 3 pin....might be the radiator fan (thermo) switch.
Pass. side, connector 1 6pin is for the lambda probe before cat.
This is all taken from Elsa (Workshop manual) according to your wire colours.
Will see if i can find the others

sorry mate...but thats all wrong lol.
I already have labelled up the radiator thermo switch and the fan connectors...
AND also have found the lambda probe connector too...which is near the gearbox yes, but has a different connector on it to the one i've listed...the lambda only uses 4 wires as well not 6.
Anyone else fancy a go?

ahh come on boys...and any girls...it'll take you 5mins to guess a few connectors, 70+ views and only one reply...

The last 2(rubber insulated ones) are abs, will go into the front wheel arches, bit of a bastard!
connector 3 goes to the fan control unit! there should be 2 connectors for the fan control unit. that 1 and a 14 pinner
Black/yellow wires with brown are for the dual tone horn
Cant really tell the others at the moment!
Here did you guys need to upgrade to a GTI fan, cos i just got a call from volkswagen saying my fan needs to be changed to a GTI one cos it is 2 speed and mines is 1 speed or something?? this true or are they f*****g me around??

ok cheers dude...thats a start...
Anyone got a photo of the fan control unit then?? what the hell does that do...apart from the obvious.
And yes- the gti has a 3 pin fan which does 2 speeds....but you can connect it up so your fan comes on the fastest speed by joining the two coloured wires together and having the brown as ground still.
what is the giant connector?? or the little 2 pin one on the other side of the car (drivers) which has the yellow/brown and brown (connector 1)...
i wish i knew someone close by with a GTI!

those connectors i've listed above are the only ones i have spare in the bay...every other connector i have found a use for using my mates mk5 spi as a guide.
I have hooked up:
All engine wires-inc reverse light switch on the gearbox, starter motor, alternator, aircon connector has been found, headlamps, indicators, fan power connector and temp sensor on the radiator, the horn, lambda probe and abs now.
what connector would go onto the headlight washers then? also...does having xenons on the gti mean you need some sort of different connector?? i.e. if so, which one is it above?
So i'm missing a fan control unit and dual horn.

The main reason the GTI fan is two speed is because of the aircon, the fan runs at low speed for the aircon and the speeds up if the coolant gets too hot. I would have thought if you don't have aircon it shouldn't be a problem as long as the fan does come on when the coolant temp increases.

so that would explain why there is a fan control unit...i guess thats for the aircon's benefit then?
would the fan still kick in without the control unit connected?
Could someone also give me a heads up on the leftover connectors which are still a mystery...cheers. Sanj.

Dave, so if i cut off the plug from the GTI loom that would connect the to the fan and soldered on the 8v plug, would this work???? would it come on at the required higher speed?? Because im not splashing out on a GTI fan when i could just use the 8v.
Sanj, i'm not overly sure what the spare connectors are until i look at the car, will try and check it out for you tonight. cheers, phil

Phil...put simply mate, YES...if you cut the gti fan connector off...then join the two coloured wired together and put them on the one coloured wire you have on your old 8v connector, then join the brown wires up to each other.
what that will do is run your fan at a higher speed...even when the engine only needs it to come on, on slow...
Only downfall to this might be that the bearings in the fan might give up faster than running it at the slow speed all the time, but you'll have plently of time to find a GTI fan in that time.
p.s cheers dude! you'll be a big help if you can find out what each one of the above really is...

bumpski...found out what that connector near the gearbox is-the 6pin plug, its for the downpipe lambda probe...the other 4 pin is for the 2nd lambda on the cat itself.
BUMP to find out what these are:
On the DRIVERS SIDE we have:
Connector 1-on the same bit of loom as the outside air temp sensors (yellow/brown and brown)
Connector 2-Short 3 pin connector (black, red/white and brown)
PASSENGER SIDE:
Connector 2- Big Connector near the grounding point behind the headlamp:
Wire colours:
Thick Red,
Thick Red/Yellow,
Thick Red/Blue,
Thick Red/White.
IS THIS ONE DEFINITELY THE FAN CONTROLLER:
Connector 3- (10 pin connector located on the same wiring loom as the thick big connector above).
Wire colours:
Red/White,
Red,
Brown,
Blue,
Green/Black,
White/Black,
Grey/Green,
Green,
Red/Black,
Black.

BUMP...need to know what these are really badly please.
Had a look on a GTI this evening and you can't see where they go very easily because the xenon ballasts, plastic parts are in the way.
surely someone knows?!

I'm gonna print this off mate and compare to mines, cos i keep forgetting when i get up to my car! but yes the one you have there is DEFO fan controller!

can you get a photo of your fan controller mate?
I'm wondering if the car will still kick the fans in even without the fan controller cos i have no aircon bits at all.
Yeah mate, print it off...this is the last bit i'm stuck on...then i'm home free!!
