Do you ever get those phases when you see something you really like and can't get it off your mind?

After recently purchasing PVW, i have not been able to think about owt else other than sell my beloved Polo, (well beloved most of time!) and buy a mk1 Golf just like that one featured in the magazine!

Now i know its not very easy to just go out and buy a car, completely strip it, clean up and sort out all the body work of a 25year old car, then paint re-trim and stick an engine back in.......but thats what i want to do!

I've always wanted a project car but just dont have the space or know how to get one and do it!

Have any of you thought of this, or know of how much these sort of projects cost, and also what sort of problems your most likely to come across???

I can see where you're coming from with Mk1 Golfs. Part of me would love to own the original GTi. But then part of me also knows that it didn't live up to its historic reputation that exists around it, I'd be very disappointed.

As for the restoration thing, I would agree that it's probably a hugely rewarding thing to do. I'm currently involved in preparing a 1989 Ford Granada for the Crumball Rally http://www.crumballrally.com/c_p/home.htm and it's going to feel pretty good when we finally get the damn thing sorted. Failed it's MOT on Friday due to leaking fuel lines, damaged CV boot and unaligned headlight. The fuel leak did however explain why we were getting even less than the 20mpg the 2.9 V6 should do.

That's a project on a very small scale, and we're doing the work ourselves so costs are fairly low. I guess for a full restoration project it all depends on the state of the vehicle you buy, and just how much work you can do yourself will determine the cost.

in the past few years i've taken on a few small scale projects, and about 6 months ago started a full g40 strip down. I consider myself fairly handy with the spanners,and have a few good mates who i can call on for spray work or bodywork.

I haven't really set a budget, as i got the car for such a good price i can afford to spent a bit of money on it.

I would say before you take on a big project, you need to find somewhere to store it.I am lucky because i have a double garage to keep mine,but would hate to think i was doing it out on the driveway in the cold and rain!

I'd also love to do a MK1 Golf, but it would have to be the cabriolet

It would also need an R32 engine in it

but i like my aircon and electric everything too much!

Have a look on Edition38, there's always plenty of good build threads going on there. The price of a show car really depends on the time frame of the build. My car didn't cost much (a lot of it was free, thanks Dad ). But a lot of cars can reach 10k+

I've always wanted a MK2 'Rocco. Now I have one, and I love it to bits. I can't wait to get busy working on it, and to make it a real nice car.

I never really wanted a show stopping car, I cannot justify the money spent on them, and the amount of work that would go into it. That's why I'm tarting the 'Rocco up with reversible mods, e.g. Coilovers, wheels, lights. If people happen to like it, well; I'll be content, but I always build cars for myself.

Here's the plan:

i brought a mk1 hatch as a project, ended up buying a mk1 cabriolet aswell because i loved them, poor little hatch got pushed to the side and never touched

oh well i had good intentions, id love another one to do, just dont have space

HA HA thats easy I'v an 04 caddy 1.6i sport back in south africa that I'm looking to import, it's got aircon and electric windows though the electric windows were retro fitted
