Engine Management Light (again)

This is starting to annoy me now! After a Long run yesterday(160 miles round trip) the light came on, I stopped for some dinner for 15 minutes and then it wouldnt start at all! 
I had all the electrics and lights etc, tried turnin the key over and nothing, not even a ticking noise of it trying to start? Any ideas??????
Has anyone got one of them things that you plug into the car to find out the fault codes, who lives close to Southend? Dont fancy Paying VW!
