1.4 16V Misfire - Not Coils!

My Dad's car has today suddenly developed a misfire and the engine light is flashing.
VW Assistance (RAC came) came out and the coils are fine and the wiring to the coil is signalling. Any ideas on what else this could be? VW assistance tech is coming out in the morning to investigate further.
Thanks in advance

Start with the basics - Have you got a spark at all the plugs and a good fuel supply?
Your misfire could be something like a bad plug or HT connection, check everything is secure and dry it could even be something like bad fuel or a blocked injector (If its multi-point injection)
If its more sinister then you could be looking at poor timing or something in the electronic management of the engine.
Hope this gives you some more pointers...
Good luck.

Sorry should have been clearer. The coil is not sending a spark but if you put it on another plug it works fine so that dismisses sparks and coils.

surely by putting the coil on a different plug and is sparks means the plug is duff

No Cos the coil is used to spark the plug in the first place! (I think!)
Anyway VW came out this morning and it was in actual fact a faulty coil! Bonus was they replaced it FOC!

Coil packs are a common fault... so much so that VAG as a whole are replacing them on most models FOC when they fail... missus had her 1.4 ibiza coil pack replaced on cylinder 3. VW are operating slightly better, generally they are replacing them as a set of four!
Anyway - happy camper once more!
