Silly question, but what are they? From what I can work out they are courtesy lights that stay red when you start the car or something.
Anyone got them in new Polo??

still dont understand what it is?? What does it do?? Why should I put one in my car.
Also, what are all the different models people talk about (e.g. 9N etc..)

The models:
6N is the model the UK folk call the Mk4. Then came the facelift version (clear headlights) which is the Mk5, or 6N2 or 6NF for Facelift.
With the modelyear 2002 your car was produced, referred to internally at VW with the 9N. AKA Mk6.
The light:
It's just a nice touch to the interior really. The 6N only has this single on/off type light, whereas the W8 Passat received this neat unit that has two places (left and right) to mount your mobile phone microphone, two switchable lights for map reading, and these red leds that softly illuminate the interior whenever you turn your lights on.
In effect, the interior has this nice reddish glow at night, very cool...

Those red lights came standard on our Audi A4 Avant - they're well cool! They sign down on the centre console, giving an eary red glow, and make your hands go red when you go to fiddle with the radio! Top stuff!
