wheel spacers?

im a total noob and haven't really done anything to my car. i have the orig bbs rims that come with the gti but dont think they do themselves any justice been tucked away under the arches and lookin to space them out so there flush with the side of the car. any of you done this? any thoughts on how big the spacers should be and also does it cause damage to the bearings? welcome all comments!!

you wanna be looking at 10mm spacers, quite a few ppl have them but i really cant remember who, best thing to do is search through this forum, somethings bound to come up!
