Another one bites the dust....

Well my car has been sitting outside my house for the last 2 weeks because when driving home a few weeks ago I started to hear a very loud noise, the noise seemed to go away while the clutch is pressed in, it's like a high pitched whirling noise, a noise like no other. First thoughts where it's the clutch as it had been slipping quite bad recently, then I thought oh no pleeeease not the gearbox.

So booked her in for this morning to have the clutch replaced, got to the garage and the man had obviously heard the car coming down the road and he said straight away that's your gearbox making all that noise, so it's currently sat in the garage, they have taken the box out and sent it away to be stripped so they can see how badly it's damaged. Fingers crossed it won't be that bad but knowing my luck it'll need completely doing, on top of that a new clutch and having just splashed out on new pads and discs plus 2 front tyres last month, not to mention it needs a service and cambelt change next, I am not happy at all. :evil:

So all in all the problem that all Polo GTi owners dread, whats next eh?

Oh and my car has 55k on the clock and no sign of ever having a gearbox or clutch changed yet.

This little car is making a nice big hole in my wallet this month :shock:

Sorry to hear that buddy.
I had my clutch replaced last week and it feels like a new car again. I should have got it done ages ago, its so light now!
But like you say when your forking out constantly it can be a drain on your wallet :(
I have recently changed all discs and pads, then did a service myself.
Two days later the car was misfiring and I discover one of the HT leads had a large hole in the side. Replaced all the leads and everything was fine. Two weeks later my ECU light comes on, luckily I have a VAG lead so plugged it and found out my brake sensor had blown, although this was cheap to replace.
I now have a small hole in the centre section of my exhaust! Its one thing after another :roll:
Your not the only one with a light wallet while owning a Polo GTi........

All these troubles of a GTi, I'm pretty sure all you heard about mine and they're still ongoing :(

I had my gearbox and clutch changed the other week. Best part of £900.

Apart from that my car has been a gem. There good little cars otherwise.

Discs/pads and servicing is just a part of owning a car so you can't complain there!

Really gets on my nerves when you hear some crazy dubnut banging on about how reliable VW's are :?

I hope it's not just a matter of time but mine's been good as gold in my two years of ownership
nothing mechanical has gone wrong, only expense I've had was to repair my boot lid as some idiot in a 4x4 hit me slightly at the lights and caved it in. but he paid for the repair and with the money I got quoted to fix it I took it to a mate's bodyshop and got the rear bumper and sides re-sprayed aswell.
Services have been uneventful apart from some rust on one of the exhaust sections which was easily sorted.
oh and the cost of refurbishing my alloys
but then again mine is a 5 door that belonged to a rich granny and a mechanic before me so it's been well looked after

mine cost my warranty 2.5k and ive spent atleast 150-200 a month in the 9 months shes actually worked and thats not on mods but just keepin her going!!

hence im plannin on gettin rid...the good news for the new buyer is theres only one thing left to change.....the gearbox


anyways unlucky to hear bout the car!

:shock: You could have almost bought a brand new Polo GTI for what you have spent on buying and running it. Some scary figures in this thread for running costs.

they are ALOT more reliable than alot of other cars. But at the same time, the parts are alot more expensive. In my past experience of driving french cars i can assure you they more reliable lol (only going by the one VW i own mind) my last 306 I replaced just about EVERY major part on the car! with 6 repairs just on the exhaust alone!! i only owned the car 9 months too.

I think that older VWs are a lot more reliable than the newer ones. One of the main reasons i bought the polo was to have a more reliable car (over my old mk2 golf), but i have spent a lot lot more on the polo, and i've owned it for less time than i had my golf.

Also, as said above, parts & servicing for new cars are generally more expensive. These are the reasons why my next car is going to be from the 80s and will have lots of dents and scrapes already on it, so i won't worry if i give it a couple more, hehe.....

I will miss the little polo though!

Ive had my GTI <6 months , and i can easliy say ive spent over 3 grand on it.

Ill get the list when i get home to show what on !!
