What exactly is peddlebox failure?

I know the peddlebox is a favorite to fail...
but...
What exactly happens when it fails? Which part snaps of/distorts etc?
Anyone with any photos of a broken peddlebox will get several virtual pints!

Tegwin, i am having the same trouble as you at the minute. Car in with VW. They said it was the peddlebox ( was fixed in 2004 on the recall ) then they have said its not, when stripping it down, they have suggested
changing the gearbox oil ( as womble68 suggested in your previous post : Struggling to get gears....is it the box, clutch or pedal box )
Having the gearbox oil changed ( NOT at VW for £120 ). I have been told that the clutch cable & clutch are OK & the gearbox isn't whining or giving
any tell tail signs of being on it way out.
Will let you know the out come after gearbox oil is changed.

i was wondering this too? because i dont think mine's been done, but dont know what the signs of one going are, so cant go to the garage saying 'i need a new one when i dont know what it is that makes you know its going, if you get me lol. my clutch get VERY heavy after a hour of driving, and kinda squeaks when pressing down, does this have anything to do with it? or is it a seperate problem all together?>

After the oil change on mine, the car is unfortunitily up for sale
Not really my decision, but the other halves.
As i have said previously the gearbox doesn't whine or make any other noise, so i am confident it's not the box ( watch me be eating my words later

).

Hi,
My pedal box failed completely. The box is made of 2 parts which are spot welded together. The stress from the clutch being used eventualy breaks the welds. At first we thought I'd snapped the clutch cable!
My cars just a 1.4 16v so it wasn't covered by the recall.
My mate and I took the pedal box out and seam welded it back together.
Its now back in the car and as good as new!
I have pic's on my mobile that I can send to people if they wanna see?

The first sign I got was that the clutch started to slip and kept needing adjustment.
We were just starting to run out of room to adjust it any more when the box failed!
This is due to the box bending before the welds give way.

Just created a post on this in the mk4 section. Mine's a mk4 1.4 16v so I got no help from VW
Anyway the pedal box (linkage) is the metal piece attaching all the 3 pedals. Its very flimsy and made of thin sheets of metal so it's prone to breaking and twisting from preasure.
First time mine broke I changed the linkage. This broke AGAIN; the next day

. The garage did warn me to change the cable and the clutch with it so I didn't blame them. They said it had a heavy clutch so it puts strain on the linkage.
Second day they changed the linkage (again), cable and the clutch. This was fine but progressively the clutch pedal kept getting harder and harder. Now I can feel play and even hear the creaking
This cost me all together £480 cos the labours expensive as all the steering, box etc needs to come out. can't afford it again so was wondering if there's a repalcement part by VW for this or whether the recall replacement for the mk5 would fit. Doubt its the linkage itself which causes the problem though, clutch, cable, gearbox etc must all play their part in this.
