Got it for my 21st, and I'm loving it so far. It has lots of settings, but they're easily understandable and it produces some top-notch shots. It has a really nice Leica lens, and has a huge zoom on it. And it shoots in RAW format.

The only issue with fuji cameras is purple fringing round white lines - its rather annoying

the fuji has a good spec and for the price with a 2gb card, its quite a buy!

the Panasonic camera that Ollie through into the mix is also very good, Leica lense is a big plus, and it has 12x optical zoom (4x longer than most compacts).

the biggest competitor to the Pana is the sony DSC-H7, seen here:

8.1 megapixel, 15x optical zoom, Carl Zeiss lense, double anti blur, face detection, Full HD compatibility (with certain cadle sold seperately).
Hollie actually has this camera and i'm very impressed with it, good zoom and the face detection is awesome!

id recommend fuji. no problems with mine and its getting on a bit now.

for that price id go for it.

major advantage of this model is that it has an 18x Optical zoom, which on a 35mm camera, equivilates to over 500mm lense!! also has a Leica lense and 8.1 megapixels!

Looks good, the only thing I'd say is at 28mm, the wide end of the lens isn't that wide. I know you said you don't really want to go for a full SLR but the entry level ones, Nikon D40/Canon 400D etc are smaller than most SLR's and lighter. They are also designed with less complicated menus and they would have the advantage of being able to switch lenses in the future if you wanted to. The 28mm to 300mm zoom that is on the Fuji camera is a good general lens but it is not particularly wide at the wide end and would most probably struggle with close-up shots.

I use a tiny pentax compact for snaps of friends/parties etc as its easy to fit in a pocket/bag. Then I use the big camera for car shows and 'proper' photography. Might be something to think about as the fuji is not particularly portable.

Anyhow, I'll stop ranting now, theres a lot of suggestions in this thread and I expect we've just confused you more!

sometimes it would be nice to have a simple point and shoot, and eventually, i may get one for, as bryony says, simple snaps etc.

my Digital SLR is the Canon 350D. the standard lens is 18mm - 55mm which is good for the wide shots, but not so good for zoom. my other lens is 70mm - 300mm which is great for the long stuff.

but obviously this comes at additional costs!

my second camera should have a specification as follows:
Good Megapixel but perhaps not quite the same as my SLR
Good optical zoom! digital zoom tends to reduce the quality of the picture so optical would be better.
good functions, more than a point and shoot camera but not as complicated as the SLR

on another note, a new addition to my camera bits would be the battery grip! £130 worth, takes two batterys and had the buttons on it so you can hold it for a portrait short like you would for a landscape!

Dan appears to know what he is talking about (too many years working for an electrical retailer) he'll try and sell it to you i tell thee!

unfortunately, i haven't had chance to play with either cameras. i know Hollie has the sony and beleived it to work really well.

both cameras look really good. your best bet i'd say is to go into a camera shop (jessops or similar) and actually have a look at them. get the feel for them, not worth having a camera if it isn't comofortable to hold and you find the functions hard to grasp! obviously some concideration should be taken, i mean, it won't be as easy to use if you'd be using it for years. but you get the idea.

i was lucky enough to know someone with the same camera as i have now, so i was able to have a look and a play before i went and bought it from http://www.digital-cameras.com

funnily enough, the bloke who had the camera actually bought it as a smaller camera which was easier to carry about
