Guys wonder if you can help.

When my car is i gear i hear a strange kind of whining noise (hard to explain) sound a little like the clutch but is this common it has been going on for quite a while now? tested the clutch and it aint slipping.
Any help would be appriciated.

Could be a wheel bearing

just happened to me too, i hoped it was a wheel bearing but i got a call from the garage saying it was gonna cost about £800 to get it sorted - bugger!

Mine was whining in 3rd and 4th so i kinda knew it was the gearbox, why did it have to happen the week i move into my new place??! Just spent £8000 on deposit for my apartment GRRRRR

thankfully my mum has leant me her Corsa to get about until the work is done

So I am guessing I will be driving along one day and it wont go into gear?
Whats the best thing to do.
