It's to protect the decent rims from the crap weather/stuff on the roads basically

so what kind of wheels do you people use during the winter?

I've got G60 steels, so has alexperkins, and tomo87.
Basically just a set of wheels that are cheap and cheerful but still look ok on the car.
The G60's can be bought new from VW and aren't a lot of £ really.

Steelies, or some cheap alloys, e.g. a set of old TSW Venoms
What I find confusing about winter wheels, is that most people swap their tyres over on to the winter wheels. Surely, for winter, you could always get a set of winter tyres, which will be better for winter conditions

Perhaps... however Britain's winter is invariably just cold and wet for the most part. Why splash the cash on winter-specific tyres when for £40 you can have the existing tyres swapped over with new valves and balanced etc.

I just bought a whole new set of tyres, as I dont like the RX2s having tyres on and off if its not necessary - id rather spend the money and have a second set....that way I have a spare set of wheels if I need them for another dub perhaps!

Same here, the G60's have got tyres on and so have the RXII's
Nothing like having 4 spare wheels and a space saver

I've put my OZ Superleggeras on for the winter, as I'm planning to refurb the 16s.
Sadly no chance of swapping tyres between 15s and 16s!

Or you could just drive carefully to avoid kerbing them on icy roads and put on a good few layers of wheel sealant

Not with split rims mate

regardless of what you coat the wheel with, the salt and grime will work its way in between the two (or three) parts of the wheel without a doubt, I believe.

Yep it could get in the crevises of split rims +they cost too much to risk them going bad. I'v had the same set of rims for 2 years, never knew of anyone changing rims for winter before I joined here!
Still can't do it myself; knowhere to put the extra set or afford a decent set of winters
