Alloy Wheels

I currently don't have any alloy wheels on my Polo and the moment
but I am after getting a nice second hand set. My mate had some very nice three-spokes for sale and he came round to see if they would fit on my car. Of course, my luck, they didn't. The four stud holes on his wheels did not match up to the holes on the hubs on my car.
To avoid further disappointment, I want to find out the exact size of the wheels required for my car, so I can look for a set and know they will fit. I know that I want four stud 14+" diameter wheels, but what other information do I need to know to know that the wheels will fit my car (like the distance between each stud, max width etc.) I don't know much about wheels sizes exept for diameters and widths, so I hope someone can help me get the right size for the alloys that will fit on my car.
P.S - I have a Polo MK3 Coupe Boulevard, with the original stock steels wheels on (
