I'm new, which Polo should I buy?

Hi all,

I'm 19 & have just over £4K to spend on car+insurance, I don't have any no claims & I've got 3 points.

I like the mk4 onwards best, but mk5 seems too expensive at the moment, I am expecting to modify it when funds allow.

Which mk4 should I get, any suggestions are much appreciated,

Cheers Steve

Ps. I'm after more power than a 1.0 & a CL upwards

buy mine! a lovely mint (december '98) 1.0L with 33k on the clock, perfect for low insurance (group 3). once i find a 16v for sale then mine will be up for grabs!

:)

it'll probably depend on the insurance in your area of the world. the mkiv 1.4 is a very capable motor, I would recommend that if you can afford the insurance.

Insurance is the biggest factor here.

My mate is in the same boat, only he's 18 with no NCB and 0 points. He's after a MK4 and has been quoted between £1650 and £2400 for insurance. Funilly enough my friend's old '95 1.6L was cheaper to insure than a '97R 1.4CL.

Get some reg numbers and give it a go.

Insurance costs...

I've checked out Hill House Hammond online.

An S red worth £3250:
1.0L - £1240 Fully Comp - £922 TPFT
1.4CL - £1446 FC - £1094 TPFT
1.6CL - £1504 - £1189
1.6GL 75bhp - £1642 - £1296
1.4 16v - £1963 - £1546

If I shop around a bit I expect I can get it a bit lower, I'll just have to check out if mod's are allowed.
I wouldn't mind going TPFT for the first year so I can manage a 1.4/1.6, but sadly not a 16v

One worth trying (ring em up) is www.needtoinsure.co.uk

01623 720081

they offer a superb service, you get free breakdown and when I put alloys on the car then they just increased my excess. Everyone will have their favourites, but it's worth a try?
