Decision decisions...

Whilst I am still kind of interested in changing my current GTi for the new GTi I'm beginning to question if I really want to move up to the newer car

Basically trying to decide if I should keep the 6n2 for a couple more years (or more), or sell it in the next couple of months?

Other than the fact that it costs a bit more money to purchase and run the 9n3 and is obviously cheaper to keep a hold of the 6n2, I've been working out some of the pros and cons of changing.

If I keep my current car I want to make some changes, such as: new (more supportive) front seats and leather trim (front seats, rear bench, door cards), Kamei debadged front grille, debadged tailgate, modification to exhaust to make it quieter (needs new centre box from Powerflow for that), and some other bits besides.

This next raft of changes will start the ball rolling on modifications that may become non-reversable, for example if I fit the kamei grille I will extend the bonnet to fill the half-moon gap left behind.

My car has done almost 88,000 miles and to be honest it will go for another 88,000 with no trouble, I look after it, service it regularly and replace worn/broken parts with genuine VAG every time. And hell if the engine breaks, there is room for a 1.8T...

Argh, what to do?!

That's why mine isn't going anywhere Si, instead I'll be getting the VXR and just using the Polo on the odd occasion meaning running costs will be pretty much nothing :D

I've been having the same thoughts recently and decided to sell up and get a golf 1.8t. The other option was putting the 1.8t into the Polo and the inconvenience of having it off the road while it was done was enough to make me decide on the golf in the end! The car will be staying in the Uk-P family though!

i've had the same thought about selling up Si, but i've decided to plug away with the Ibiza for a couple more years and see what comes of it!

i'd keep it and carry out the plans you have in mind and then in a couple of years, get a 9n3 gti when the prices are a bit lower!

It's up to you Si. Both cars are ace as far as I'm concerned. Every man and his dog has a Clio 182 but I'd rather have a Polo GTI, new or old

Heh heh. My better half owns a 172 Cup that I get to drive every now and again, and in fact after the first couple of times I drive it I was seduced by the power and handling and starting looking on pistonheads and autotrader at 18 Trophys

Re the engine swap Bryony, I'd have use of aforementioned Clio to keep me on the road whilst the car is away... engine transplant isn't cheap though!

Dan - in a couple of years, the 9n3 GTI will be cheaper but also, the R32 will be cheaper

Cheers

Well coming from someone who got rid of their gti I reckon you should hang onto it, you've done alot to it so why not go that extra distance and give it those finising touches!

I really would have done, the only reason I didn't is because an offer to good to refuse turned up, the old gti is such a nice looking car, ask anyone and they will agree

she will always be a fond memory!

As I've said before, also think about what your personal plans are for the future, particularly the next couple of years as the only things you mention are related to your car.

Do you plan to move out, rent or buy your own place or have any other plans that could affect your financial situation? If so, would you still be able to afford the loan repayments and running costs of the 9n3? Don't forget you will also incure a fair amount of depreciation if you buy a new or nearly new car, which won't do you any favours if you only keep the car short term.

All good points, thank you.

Chatting to a few people last night and have pretty much decided to keep her. After seeing some last night I want a pair of Corrado/Golf mk2 Recaro recliners now ha ha!

Marc, as goes moving out etc, that would be on the cards some time in the next 12-18 months and if all goes well it'll be a joint mortgage with my long-term girlfriend. You're quite right to point out the extra costs that this will undoubtedly raise! :)

Well i haven't been on here for a while.....

After selling mine i do regret it alot, seeing as its won 3 trophies this year and the new owner hasn't done anything new to it.

I've had my turbo fun and now thats gone and i'm driving around a caddy van which to be honest makes me laugh everytime i drive it!!

If i could role back time i think i'd have kept the Gti and enjoyed it for a lil longer.

But all's not lost as my girlfriend wants one so i might be able to turn it into a show and shine winner again!!

Keep it si and change it make it more unique and enjoy!!

The more people sell up and buy a faster car the more it makes me want to keep mine

I have to say that even although I changed to a MK5 Golf GTI I do regret selling the Polo, the Golf is a lot faster and handles superbly ironically the two things the Polo GTI didn't do well from the factory however I still miss the Polo for some reason I can't put my finger on. I have seriously considered going to the new owner and trying to buy it back to replace the Girlfriends car which is getting changed after christmas.

If I was to go back I would probaly have kept it and dropped a IHI'd 1.8T in it, 350bhp in a Polo would have been interesting talk about the ultimate sleeper.
