Servicing questions

My car have got a full VW main dealer service history and is due another service now. It's done 82,000 miles so what sort of service should i expect to be getting? Last time i had an oil change, air filter, pollen filter, spark plugs and brake fluid change.

Also i will be selling my car very soon and was wondering whether it's still worth me getting a main dealer service?

I saw something mentioned recently about VW suggesting they'll price match an independent on servicing- I'm guessing this means when they use Genuine Parts - check the VW site - I think the offer ran to the end of the year.
It sounds like it would be worth it in your case.
If not round my way either I do my own work or pass it to a VW Specialist - near me is one called Central VW - sure there must be someone similar in your area.

It's the labour costs that's the killer though isn't it when it comes to main dealers.

Hi owenjt....I must live near to you...Im in Malvern, Worcestershire...

Without going to look I cant be sure, but it does say in the handbook what the service intervals are and what jobs are required at each....

I do all my own servicing work, and regardless of what the book says I change the following every 10,000 miles or every year(Which ever comes sooner)

Engine oil, Gearbox oil, Oil filter, Plugs, Brake fluid...I also change the air and pollen filter every other service unless they are particularly gunked up.

I also like to clean the throttle body and engine bay and also flush out the fuel filter every service as well as cleaning and lubricating all brake components and checking suspension bushes, but im just a bit picky and like perfection...which is why I dont ever pay a spanner monkey touch my car when I can do a better job...mainly because I actually give a toss about what im doing!

True about caring about the car, and all that, and when it comes to my own car I'd service it myself or get my brother to lend a hand, but I guess if a car has already got a shiny line of VW Stamps, there's not point in not, if your about to sell, and especially if you can get them to price match. It wouldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks for this. It says as long as quotes are produced in writing and quoted using only Volkswagen Original Parts, it's from a garage within a 5 mile driving distance from the VW dealership and like for like content of quote must be for exactly comparable work (whatever this means).

Will see if i can get a few quotes from some independents and see what comes up. I guess not all would use genuine VW parts though, so may have to source an independent VW garage.

Well it seems this is not as easy as i thought. Went to a garage and asked for a written quote, and they gave me a business card with details written on the back. Then went to main vw dealer and they said you have to have a quote on headed paper, stating exactly what service it's for and that it uses genuine vw parts - something which i can't exactly ask for at another garage, well cheeky.

So ended up booking it at the main dealer for £170.

Can't of seen asking if they used Genuine VW Parts as being cheeky, CentralVW near where I live is an an Independent and they use Genuine Parts - according to the Parts Counter at Dane VW they're their biggest customer. Obviously they're not to bothered about the small amount of trade that goes to them, its not exactly like they'd miss the trade.
Guess it depends on the Garage, and any way everything will be sorted at the end of the day :)

My plugs don't need doing for another 2 years, just done my oil so that's good for another 5k, brake fluid done in march, cleaned my BMC, pollen filter is ok, will be changing brakes hopefully next march to G60's.

Always ask for genuine parts, a garage thought they would use a non standard coolant pipe in my car. This resulted on the pipe leaking and cooking my engine and almost damaging it
