ATG is not a valid gearbox code. The 2 gti boxes are ffw and etg.

From what i can work out (studying etka for hours when my box went for the fourth time) both boxes are identical, in terms of ratios and internal components.

I've said it many a time, they're is no way to uprate the gearbox other than changing the fifth speed bearing from a plastic one to a metal one. And in all honesty, as long as you keep the gearbox oil topped up (these boxes always leak between the casing join), that bearing should last for ages.

You cant strengthen the box, but you can prolong its life. Change the oil every 10k miles. Use 75/90 fully synthetic gear oil (use a good brand). Use a ptfe treatment (slick 50/wynns etc). Check the oil in the box every couple weeks. Since i rebuilt my box this is what i have been doing, and its silky smooth and dead quiet like the day i put it back in.

Not a chance i'm afraid. The box needs removing from the car and splitting. Sorry...

Getting bored of writing this out. Try a search...

Clicky

You would have to buy a plastic bearing from vw and take to a bearing shop to be matched up.
