Loud rattling on startup

I've recently noticed a loud rattling sound coming from my engine (1.0L) when I start it up from cold.

The best way to describe it is like lots of small pelets being shaken inside a container, only grittier.

It only happens when idleing and up to just over 1000rpm. It can't be heard when revved above that.

Once it's warmed up the rattling dissapears.

Anyone got any ideas?
It's a bit worrying as I'm sure it's never made this noice before.

Cheers

EDIT: It's now developed a whining noice under acceleration which seems to be coming from the same place as the rattling.

is it more of a rattly sound~?if it goes once the engine is warm then i would suggest that maybe the tappets are the cause, its common for older polos to get a bit noisy like that. my old 1 litre was the same. you can fix it by rebuilding the head or you can live with it and just make sure you use decent quality oil.
