Right guys...this is pretty serious, i have no car right now...haven't done so for the past 2 weeks! and i need it back...
What i need to know is the following:
1.) what are the gear ratio differences between the two gearboxes??
2.) Are all of these mk4/mk5 boxes rod change??
3.) what is the likelyhood of me using a 1.4 16v box on my GTI engine until i can fix my GTI box...
pictures, part numbers...anything...please throw it into this topic. The sooner the better folks as i wanna get things rolling asap.
Cheers! Sanjay.

Thanks 8080--do you have a clearer version of the 2nd page at all??
I'm trying to compare the 1.4 16v and the 1.6 16v and i can't make out what the ratios are for the 1.4 16v.
Where did you get this info from?? I want that book!! lol.

Actually when i click on your links...it makes it clearer!!
1.4 16v 100bhp box:
1st: 3.45
2nd: 2.10
3rd: 1.45
4th: 1.10
5th: 0.89
Final drive: 3.88
1.6 16v 125bhp
1st: 3.46
2nd: 2.12
3rd: 1.44
4th: 1.09
5th: 0.89
Final drive: 3.60
So basic differences are in the final drive really!!
Would this 1.4 16v mk5 100bhp box be the same as the mk4 polo then??
Does anyone know that?

What are the faults in these gearboxes by the way? As in what goes causing them to break.

something to do with either the main inner shaft bearing or the ones on the gears.
My final drive/diff are deemed useless due to a bearing exploding.
In time i'll take apart my own GTI box and try and do some investigating for you guys...
Lets just put it this way though...after speaking to an ex specialist, its not worth the cash these rebuild guys charge!!
I've now got hold of a 1.4 16v mk4 16v box...lets see what it does.

Wouldn't a 1.4 Gearbox just go pop ?
If the 1.6 Gti Gearbox can't handle power.
You may be better to keep your cash and just get the 1.6 gti box

shouldn't do hopefully...the 1.4 16v box is stronger...i think the bearings they used in the GTI box are the main problem with it.
I've got the box now, so i'll give it a try and see what happens...its only 25bhp more on what it's used to anyway...so shouldn't effect it as long as i don't go crazy with the speed...
The car will no longer do over 130mph...but will do about 120ish mph.
It should have faster acceleration i hope instead.
Getting the box back on the engine is however proving difficult!! might have to take engine out and then back in again!

The bearings are the same wether its a 1.6 or 1.4
The box is pretty much the same box.
The Polo GTI Box and Polo 100bhp box is the same box.
The Polo 75hp 1.4 is the same box with different ratios.
I'm using a Polo GTI engine with 75hp box in the Lupo, with GTI clutch.
Seems to work...
I think the reason why the GTI suffers so badley is because the box is not deigned to take that sort of power.
Its the same box which was found in the old Polo 60bhp 1.4!!!!

ohh damn!! i'm using the CWX polo mk4 16v 100bhp box in mine now...i'm hoping it'll be fine until i get my box rebuilt, i'm gonna take apart my own GTI box and see what i can do...take pics etc. Its just cold and wet right now, so might be after xmas! lol.
