MKV Golf

Who's seen one in the flesh?

Went to my dealers this morning, just to do that

Actually, apart from the whole rear end disaster (clusters and *tiny* little aero wiper which justs looks stupid), I really like it!

The headlight cluster is a little bit fussy, but there are some really clever touches, like the "eyebrows" already in the bonnet leading edge. I hadn't noticed it in the photos, but the bonnet trails over the top of the headlamps and grille very subtly by a couple of cm*

Interior looked a bit too somber, but very nicely done. Maybe it looked a little cramped, with all the dark plastic, but overall very nice. I think the comments about downgrading of materials might have been sparked off by the headlamp switch units which looked a *lot* like the one off the fabia and mk4 polo - i.e. flush with the dash.

But, overall, surprised how much i liked it.

Salesguy I know tried to convince my it's visual appearance is exactly as a golf should be, but other than the headlamps and the thick c-pillars, I'm not convinced. I think it works well in it's own right, though.

He was very proud of the Car of the Year 2004 Award, and had all the off-prints of WhatCar to hand!

Also - to make this polo specific - asked for any news of a gti - and none yet.

He knew about the Trek coming soon and was aware of the GT option package in germany. He suggested that the GT would be a single model in the UK, rather than an option on any model, per Germany.

He commented that the 6n had had it's GTI two years into its life, and he was a little surpirsed that nothing has come through on the 9n yet, but there you go...

Asked for anything on the GTI to be sent through when he gets it, but we'll see...

Deek.

* or maybe their example had just been built the same way my polo was!

The MK5 Golf Aero wiper is exactly the same as the 9n aero wiper

I saw one last weekend at Drift Bridge dealer in Epsom.

It was a really nice dark blue colour.

Shame the colour didnt disguise the ugly car any better...

My biggest concern (apart from the MPV looks and rear clusters) is the price of the thing. The current 150bhp GT 2.0 FSI petrol car it £18k! This is gonna make the GTi around 20k when it's released based on those prices
I'm hoping it's just priced highly for the people who want one on release so desperately that they arent bothered by the price tag. The new Golf GTi's gonna have to be on hell of car to sell with a price tag like that. Especially given that all the other manufacturers are releasing new versions of their small family compacts this year aswell (astra,focus,leon,ect.). There's hot versions of most of them in the pipeline aswell.

Strangely enough I was just passing my local dealer and I thought I would pop in and have a gander at what they have to offer.

The MkV just doesn't seem to do it for me, I like the old skool look with the MkI-III and I've only just started to like the MkIV (esp the Anniversary model!). It looks too much like other cars and...just too boring? plain? there's no spark...

Apart from the looks department is does look and sound well built...I hope they have taken heed of the bad views/opinions/experience of the poor build quility of the previous Golf. £20k+ for the GTI? I would probably go for a second hand R32 or the Anniversary model for that price...or even a S3...

Yeah, I saw one last night/early this morning. It was parked up in some side street, a black 5 door 2.0 FSI.

I think thats what it was as I was on my way to the taxi rank after a night out on the town!

After I had had a look round it three or four times, I thought that it looked quite good but I will take a better look @ the stealership on launch day this friday.

I didn't think that they were ment to be out on the road until launch day anyway.

I sat in one today (2.0 TDI) for the first time, and have to admit it's nicer in real life and it does grow on you.

It's feels well made and comfortable, however the price tag is daunting, bring on the FSI turbo but PLEASE drop the prices or people will keep moving to Honda and Audi!

VW are known for its perfection, endurance, refinement and reliability. I guess what we pay for is what we get.

But its also when a car gets really common, due to high public demands, the prices will be increased!

My view is that the new mrkV is ugly but not that ugly once you see it in the flesh simply because you are expecting such a let down yet up close it does seem a bit cultured. I thing VW have been unconsciously effected by other designs such as the Megane. However car companies new flair for "unconventional design" may be perverted into monstosities such as the Vel Satis or beauties such as the Mazda RX8.

Verdict: Golf MrkV, an ugly car at first but not so bad in the flesh......but stil an ugly car and a let down as we were expecting better. Done

some nice little touches, :) but let down by the quality finish on some things. :(

Lets see if this improves when they do the GTi. :!:

Has to be a joke, right?

I mean, compared to the new Focus estate:

There's just no contest. I know Golf Estates never sold in huge numbers, but if this is VW's best effort then why bother?
