Cheers Buddy...
How would 16" 8J go on the Mk5 - with about 70mm drop ?

I had 7j 16s with 195/45/15s on a 60 drop and that was fine until you had 4 people in the car. I'd say with 195/40s you would have no problem. 8js are another thing all together, you'd need uber stretch tyre or bring the car up 10mm

Okay, im not fussed about bringing it up - the wheels are 8j though so i guess it would need to come up - also i have the half cage in the back - so never any rear passengers.

Yep, my polo running 195/45R16 too,
rims are 7Jx16" ET 40, it rub the arches slightly in tight cornering as well.
And the ride became a little bit bumpier compare to stock
6Jx15 .
Forgot to mention it's lowered 30mm

can be done but not very driveable.... ive running 8x15 ET25 rim dropped about 50mm at the back and i get rubbing over bumpy roads, or carrying more than 1person in the back... i have had my arches rolled and still rubs.
unless you have super stiff suspension at the back in which case you may get away with it but your arches will need rolling no matter what.
