Went in2 a bodyshop 4 a quote the other day, and I said I wanted the bump strips colour coded. The guy told me that the bump strips on the doors are stuck on and that they dont have any pins or recesses 4 them to fit in. Is this correct??!!?? Because if it is I'll just have them taken off and painted.

there are locator pins on the strips themselves. only up to the mk4 polo had stuck on strips.

you can take them off, cover the holes with tape, paint them and then re-stick them back on

just leave them on the car and spray them, a body shop will do that no problem and yeh there r holes behind them and if u want to leave them off they wil have 2 be welded and filled but please dont do that because i want my car 2 b a 1 off lol

don't leave them on the car to spray them! that's very budget and the paint will peel after a while. taking them off is a couple of hours work but definitely worth it.

Mk5 ones were stuck on too hehe I had the fun experience of removing all the foam!!

Its more beneficial to order a new set of primered ones from VW - that way you dont have to combat a textured finish, and as they are brand new, will sit back in better

you can overspray onto the rest of your paintwork, and it wont get round the edges of the trims properly. Also they need rubbing down prior to spraying and a fair few coats of plastic primer to create a good surface.

what?!

there's no way that leaving them on will work properly, you have to mask the surface and you'll never get a proper bond of paint around the masking tape. water will work it's way in.

for the sake of 2 hours, you will get a much better finish and a much easier job, and you won;'t have to spend over an hour masking the whole car. talk about being lazy but probably causing more work for yourself in the long run.

by taking them off, you spray them and don't ever have an "edge" for the weather to get into the paint.

if you're going to do it, do it properly.

I completely agree, Its best to remove them and a good bodyshop will almost definetely refuse to do them if you want them done whilst on the car.

I've seen a car where a bodyshop didn't remove the mouldings - A couple of months down the line the paint started to flake near the edges.

It may cost more, but best to have it done properly - otherwise its probably just going to cost you much more on the long run!

I'm not even sure it'll cost more, TBH.

In fact, I have no idea how someone could actually make it even look 1/2 decent if they were left on the car. there would be overspray on the bodywork if the masking wasn't absolutely 100% perfect.

and another thought is how on earth you could smooth them from the textured surface!

can u get these from the dealer then, not reali a handy man tbh?

yep, pre-primed and smooooth but about £130 all in!
