hi, im confused!? the drivers side dipped bulb has blown (its the gas discharge projector lamp one, a D2S bulb i think) do i have to replace it with an identical one, i.e.

is the voltage different for hid's? (because of the ballast thing) are the osram (ebay ones) actually hid bilbs as they still have an element? and propper gas discharge ones dont do they?

I have a reciept from vw when the previous owner had the same bulb changed at the dealership totalling £204.49!!!!! £99.03 for the bulb £75.00 for labour and £30.46 vat!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i really dont want to pay that!!!!!!

ok, i now know that i need the D2S bulb for the hid lamp, does anyone know the safe way to change this without getting electricuted? or know of a link showing how to do so? thanks.

AFAIK you can only replace like for like bulbs. I am not sure on how you go about replacing them in the projector headlights, but I'd recommend taking it to a garage as these are extremely fragile, unlike normal H7 bulbs

I'd go for the ones in your 3rd post. The h7 bulbs will defo not fit. They are easy to change and you dont have to remove the headlamps unlike the sidelight bulbs. Make sure your ignition is off and the lights are switched off and you wont be electricuted! Do NOT touch the glass on your new bulbs as this will shorten there life significantly.

Be warned though, i have 6000k bulbs as my dipped, they do not light every time, you quite often have to turn them on and off 5 or 6 times to get them to both light. I think this is due to the standard ballast not firing as much as an aftermarket one would. I have hid's as my main beams and they fire every time with the ballasts they came with.

thanks guys, does anyone know which manufacturer vw uses for there oem gas discharge bulbs (if anyone has replaced theirs what did it say on it?) i think its osram or philips. also is the standard colour temperature 4100k or 4300k? will it be ok to have a differant make each side if they are the same spec? cheers.

I know it will be more expensive but I would be highly tempted to replace both headlight bulbs at the same time with the same type of bulb. This way you guarantee that they will be the same type and temperature, so no chance of a mismatch

sounds like good advice, i have the reciept from vw from when the other side was done by them. the part NO. is 104 457 01 does anyone know the make and spec? im pretty sure its 4300k and either osram or philips. thanks guys.

went for these, seemed like a good price, and i can keep the good one as a spare when i replace that aswell.

have you had everything fitted yet? If so how are you finding the night breaker H1s?

I'm currently looking for decent H1 and H7 bright white replacements for my fulls and fogs

finally fitted all today, verry fiddly envolving taking out battery and cold air feed out but once i figured out what i was doing it went ok. replaced all the bulbs only to see that the hid one replaced by the previous owner at a vw main dealer at the cost of £99 just for the bulb wasnt even the propper philips one but some cheap looking hungarian make! i also managed to snap one of the headlight back where i didnt see there was a third screw holding it in place! DOH! but it seems securely sealed with the other two (guess i will tell if it starts fogging up). havnt had a chence to drive with the lights on but will do so to work on boxing day night and let you know, they look pretty good though, and have got some of the h7's for my day for his cooper s and may get some for my fogs if they make a big differance (although the fogs arnt used much so i may wait until one has blown) also washed the car and took some pics (on phone camera) here

Just fitted H7 and H1 night breakers, not to the polo but to a pug with morette conversion, the light is a lot brighter and white compared to the stock bulbs, driving in town it isn't so noticeable but still an improvement, I drive out in the sticks and it is a vast improvement, so looks like £45 well spent in my case, time will tell if they last as I run with dipped lights on during the day.
