I start this topic off 80,000 miles and on my forth gearbox rebuild or so called "NEW"
two new gearboxes by vw.
then the diff cups fell off , the second on,damaging the casing and diff,Vw say Its due to being "lowered" I think its because the guy never put the surclips back correctly,
Now the box is leaking and the bearing are going too, then xmas eve it gets stuck in fifth.
Can anyone beat that.

cant beat that I'm afraid, but i'm not far off - had 4 related issues, two rebuilds, and twice it would only go into 1 or 2 gears. If the problem is that later its a simple fix - like 5 mins of a job for the mechanic - just speaking from personal experience. My car has done 84k.
Apparently the second issue of selecting gears is a common fault in all polo's, not just the gti. Hope that helps, but sorry to hear of your bad luck..I know how it feels.

Well...my car has done 53,000 miles....and today is the day its origional gearbox is being taken out to be reconed... Not to bad lol...
And with regards to poor gearchange, my theory is this...
(Obviously a s**t gearbox design plays a part in this, but...)
Because of the way the GTIs gear selector mechanism (the bit tht links the gearleave to the box) is designed, as the car accelrates or brakes the gearbox moves and puts stress on the gearchange linkage causing this quite delicate mechansim to bind...this giving poor gearchange...
That is only a theory, but once I have torn my car appart in a bit I will know for sure...

I've heard this a couple of times now,
Does it really make a difference in any way?

it really depends on how low it is. And what impact the chassis takes due to it.

can i ask a question to all above when your gearboxes failed after rebuild was it the same fault you had or different? the reason i ask is most gearbox refurbishments are not a complete replacement of parts it is only a replacement of worn or broken parts at time of strip down and vw replacement gearboxes are not brand new they are factory reconditioned. the only way to repair a box and reduce future break down would be to replace nearly everything inside and that wouldcost a fortune this is why so many boxes fail a second third and fourth time.

VW recon boxes are rebuilt with all new parts to factory standard...therefore they still carry the possibilty of going wrong again, as the parts arent revised.

Like I said before, I think the gearbox will be the death sentence for many GTI's in 5 years time. People won't want to fork out on a gearbox rebuild and will just scrap the car. Not a good future for the 6N2 GTI

im on my 4th box but have had my box out 5 times !
U name it ive had it break from bearings calling time and exploding (putting a hole the size of a fist though the casing) stipping every teath off 3rd gear! diff splitting! clutch release fork snapping (not a rebuild but had 2 take the box out! and last but not least a slector arm bending jaming it in second!
And before any1 brings it up yes my gti does get a hard time (including some track time) but its a hot hatch thats what there there for!
Im amazed no1 has come up with a upgrade using another box, im also in the cosworth world and the mt boxes in the 4x4 cosworths r just as bad (mind u not till u start pushing 350hp not 125 like the gti's) but there r no end of upgrades avalible 2 them from upgrated internals to rally type strait cut boxes and for the rearly extream u can have a skyline box fitted 1000hp potential!
I know polo gtis havent got the massive folling the cosworths have and havent been around aslong but still there r anothe of them out there!
At one point i had 4 mates all with gtis but they all quickly sold up when there gearboxes started failing for the second time!
They used 2 rally gti's dint they (super 1600) and track g40s (very similar box) what did the rally boys do about the weak gearboxes dout they would have put up with the boxes failing every other rally?????????

o just thought ive also had the circlip that holds 5th gear on snap causing 5th gear 2 fall of the shaft well half fall of jaming it in 5th!
Luckly i manached 2 take the cover off and pull 5th gear out complete (on the m1) and carry on up 2 collage in luton in fourth!!
