Removing gearbox PITA!

I have spent 6 hours trying to remove the gearbox from my GTI this afternoon...

Most of that time was taking bits out of the way and smacking my nuckles on things trying to undo the bolts...

The gearbox has now popped off the engine but it wont come any firther...Its almost like its sticking on something, either something inside the clutch or on the diff/subframe area...

What methods have people used to remove the box before?

Rotate the gearbox so the diff drops down and then pull the box out, or pull the box across and out...

It just doesnt want to come, we have tried everything we can think of...

Anyone have any cunning thoughts on this? Its a pain in the arse!"

I Know exactlt how you are feeling I had this problem on my mk2 golf gti.

What you got to do is tilt the box till the diff cups pass the fly wheel.
Rotate the box as far as possible anti-clockwise.
Lower the engine.

Give it a wiggle and should come off.

2 mins it should take.

Good luck

Finaly came off after levering it with a fencepost...

It appears that the slider mount for the release bearing has snapped clean off at some point and has caused all sort of damage to the input shaft and various other parts... I think the reason it wouldnt come out was because the release bearing springs were caught up on the clutch fingers...Not good!

Luckily the gearbox is off to be reconditioned and I have a brand new clutch waiting to slide in...so things might look better in the new year
