The Polo 1.6 Sport - who owns one?

Post by alexperkins »

Hi All

After much deliberation, my new car has been decided, but not to be purchased as yet.

Who on here...if anyone...owns a polo 1.4/1.6 FSI Sport? (two because they scrapped the 1.4 in favour of the 1.6)

This is the one with the chromed front grille, and all the features the GTI has minus a small selection.

Id be interested to see what the general opinion is on them, and what the maximum BHP the engine can be tuned to is, if anyone has done this

Cheers

You want opinions Alex? Well here's mine:

From a nice car point of view the Sport is a nice car.
From a young car enthusiasts point of view it's a nice car that isn't going to be a fast car. In all honesty you could spend a grand on performance mods (re-mapped ECU, exhaust, intake, the usual stuff) and struggle to gain 10bhp. The car is basically EU4 compliant and set up for low emissions. It will have a mild camshaft and all sorts of emissions crap stuck in the electronics.
If you want a quicker Polo you'll have to go for a TDI. For less than £300 the TDI can be given GTI like performance (in the case of the 1.4 TDI this may only mean 6N GTI performance though!!!).
Aside from that it's a very pretty car, and with some nice wheels it'll get the juices flowing (order one with a nice set of Veranos?).

That's just my opinion though and no doubt someone will be along to tell me I've got my head stuck up my bottom so I'll leave it at that. :D

Thats what i was thinking :P But remember i have to keep it insurable - 1.6 sport is only a group 6 - anything over 8 isnt realistically insurable at my age.

here here!

Ok so I'm going to bite the bullet and tell you in all honesty. Personally I think it's a bit girly! Spose you could beef it up with a GTi body kit & wheels.
Go for the TDI for the torque and the feeling of acceleration + good economy. had an Ibiza FR TDi for a year which was ace! Have you tried an Ibiza TDi Sport (130) group 7 ( FR TDI group 8 )

I have the old 1.4 FSI (pre-facelift) which can be chipped to 100bhp for about £600 which is quite expensive. On a long run at 70mph  you can see 50 mpg.

I don't think the newer 1.6 uses FSI technology but stand to be corrected! If you can afford the TDI that would be the better choice if you do alot of miles and can live with the noise of the engine (my FSI is near silent at standstill).

Hi, here are some pics of my 5 door 1.6 Sport

http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforum/v ... highlight=

It has a non FSI engine, I've seen a couple of places offering engine
management upgrades for around £200.

Performance is not going to set the world alight, I'm running one for
cheaper running costs than a 1.8T (much lower insurance, slightly
lower maintenance and 44-47mpg)

I suggest you take a test drive, use the used car finder at vw.co.uk
there are plenty of used 1.6 to try
