You know thcarrpy standard front dash speakers on mk3? Well there crap. I just fitted some 6x9's in back so want a decent set of front ones to help them chug along. What size speakers will fit in dash? Oh yeah............. I also got some 13cm ones and I want them in the door. Is this a lot of work? Cheers.

These frontspeakers are 8.7cm. Trouble with that size is new speakers are hard to find. But with some minor modification you can fit 10cm ones.

minor modifications? i was told that 10cm will fit but u have to slightly open out the hole, cut a couple of clips off cover and i spose u would have to drill the holes to hold the speakers in place. (but how do u get a drill with the window in place?

what i have seen someone do is make up some mdf plates, carpeted and placed in the existing place (just remove the cover n u have a nice flat base) then u can mount some larger speakers into that! only thing is, they won't be hidden!

door speakers, u gotta be careful with these, my advise would be to get some door pockets with built in speaker pods but these are quite expensive!

That is what I mean with minor mods

lol! still, how do u get a drill in there? i think the best option would be to make up some MDF plates! i have seen them on one before and it looked fine! not sure wot size u can go up to though, probably only 10cm

It didn't take me long to blow up my original fronts! I replaced them with a set of 10cm 2 ways. I used a dremel multi with a drill bit in and enlarged the hole a bit. Still couldn't get it upright to drill the holes so i just did them at a bit of an angle, but they were good enough to get the speakers nice and secure. I did have th space it a bit as the magnet would hit the inside metal otherwise.

I'm halfway through making a set of door pockets with speaker pods in atm. Using the original pocket to start. Intend to make glass fibre copies when they're done so if anyone's interested lwet me know.

ll you nee to do is just drill another hole and they just fit straight in (and apparently sound good too) but I'm not into ICE so I cant comment, they're just speakers to me

10cm speakers are easy to fit - they come with self-tapping screws.

I used a screwdriver head with a hexagonal end, and used a spanner to put the screws in. It's quite easy to do.

I widened the holes with a Stanley Knife.

You need to chop the grilles up too.

Half an hour's work, max. Fiddly but worth it.

I am using some 9cm Pioneer speakers in my Mk3. All I had to do was rip out the old ones, shave a tiny bit of plastic off to widen the hole slightly (used a stanley knife) and it was perfect.

Those stock speakers are really crap aren't they.

Interesting... i had to opt for 8cm JBLs in the end. Pretty good tho the bass could be better (tiny things! mind you I have 10 inch hi-fi woofers in the back shelf so its no worry..). They pretty much fit right in the same hole, except a little loose. They don't have the same clips as the OEM speakers, or the same wire connections - you have to snip off the wire clips, strip some insulation and tie/solder them yourself unless you have some crimps or other helpful gadgets. Would have screwed them in but... too lazy, too little light, no spare screws Had to chop a small bit of placcy off the speaker covers to get em to go down, but once they were on the fit was nicely snug and the speakers don't move around. A definate upgrade. Only problem is, now that i'm not confined to the telephone frequency range of the VW paper cone originals, the tape noise is a lot more apparent! ...making me curse my stereo for not taking CD adaptors

(best upgrade you can do in the first place - getting rid of that 1980s Blaupunkt s*** 10w stereo!)

How do you fit those 10cms again? The 8cms I bought were literally the only size and make that I found to fit.

Mate has just fitted sum 10cm speakers 4 me. Didnt take long, no problems.
Just removed the inner trim kinda thing?! that was preventin them from going in, and wired um up. Most modification that was needed, was cutting clips and other bits off the mesh grills, 2 get them 2 fit bak on.
Thats another job done!

i must've been well lucky to come across some pioneer direct replacements in the scrappy then

only cost me £10 too
