Gearbox extened life....

Hi all,
Went to my gearbox center today who changed the box on my gti.
After six months they do a full inspection to check that everything is was it should be.
Spoke to the mechanic afterwards about uprating the gearbox and bearings so they last longer. He said that its mainly the bearings that wear, causing the box to moan. These bearings cannot be uprated apparently.
He did agree that the gearbox are poor but the best thing to do is change the oil in the box every 2 years.
Some of you guys probably know this but just thought I would raise a post.
Do any of you guys ever change the oil your box's? If so what oils do you use?
