hey everyone, been looking on the forums frm the end of last month since starting my search for my new gti, saw all the common faults.. but wasnt sure if it was the right car for me, with serious issues such as gearbox and pedal box issues, which are expensive to fix lol

decided to go ahead with the car, and bought myself a w plate 2000 black 3 door, with 55k on the clock all full service history, in immaculate condition for 4.5k, with a years road tax and years MOT.. might have paid a bit more but i guess the condition of the car is worth it.

jus wanted to introduce myself on the forums, i will be trying to be active as i can on here!.. i can see Tim is from newport, ive never seen ur car around here mate, where bouts in newport u from?

i think my pedal box is on the way out.. the reverse gear is crunching most of the time :(.. and the biting point is pretty low.. anyone know how to identify when it has gone and needs replacing?

Welcome! Your VW dealer should be able to check if you car has had it's recall (check for anything outstanding), that's if it doesn't have a sticker in the boot. I had to phone to check mine was done.

As for the gears, the gearbox is quite notchy as standard. I occasionally find it hard to put it in a certain gear. It's if this is happening often and there are whining noises then you need to be worried.

Your clutch may just need the cable adjusted/replaced, or even the whole clutch. It is quite heavy as standard.

Hope that helps a little!

cheers for tht mate, my mates mate works in VW, he dun a check for me and apparently its never been recalled, as it hasnt, would they still fix any problems tht arise even though the cars so old now under warranty as its a common fault?

my mate said that the pedal box looks like its on its way out.. but theres still a few miles to go on there. i find it difficult to drive the car smoothly at the moment because of the issues of the biting point being so low and clutch being heavy, i may get it checked to see if the clutch needs replacing.

Welcome to the site - with regards to the recall - it should be done F.O.C. but ring first to double check.

Crunching gears is normal if going into reverse because there is no synchro mesh for reverse gear in the Polo Gti - so don't worry too much about this.

Enjoy your time here :)

get that pedal box sorted, vw should do it for free if it hasn't been done as it was an official recall!
