is bmc the best carbon filter? if so why? what makes it better than say a ripspeed one from halfords? or any of the other e-bay ones? (apart from the price) cheers.

That is a point, I've never questioned why either.
I've just alway thought with this kind of thing, you get what you pay for.
And I've heard nothing but good things about them on here so confidently bought one, never regretted it

There is alot of difference between the quality of the BMC and Ripspeed 1 the carbon fibre is very poor quality and very thin also the filter inside is not as good quality as the BMC.
If you are on a budget the Ripspeed 1 is ok but dont expect it to be brilliant as you get what you pay for.
I would always recommend the BMC to anyone.

yeh the ripspeed one did look like pish in the flesh, really thin carbon fibre that didnt really look like it would resist much heat etc.
I currently have a K&N induction which is bolted straight on to the throttle body. it looks and sounds nice, and is good on cold mornings for the first few minutes before the engine bay heats up too much. but it sits right above the exhaust manifold which is not ideal for getting cool air in! there is a cold feed pipe aimed at it but it only blows onto one small area of the round filter, and there is no heat shielding at all! in fact the top of the filter is stainless steel so thats going to absorb and retain heat if anything.
So i think the bmc is the way forward, with a nice fat cold air feed into the off side wing (think mouse has done this on his car)
anyone know of where to get the best deal on one? i think they only make 2; 1 for upto 1.6l and one for above 1.6l engine. but i think you can get them to suit differand size ducting pipes cant you? (eg 70mm or 80mm). so as long as i get the smaller size filter can with the 70mm type inlet/outlet and a 90 degree elbow then all i will need is a meter ir so of 70mm ducting hose to finish it off prpperly.
does that sound about right?
where did you guys get yours from?
cheers!

In my opinion the BMC is a complete waste of money. It'll just absorb the hot air.
Just get a better cold air feed into the standard airbox. Alot of people have had significant power gains after testing their cars on a rolling road using their standard air box with a better cold air feed. This is after using a BMC.

do you mean because of where its positioned above the exhaust manifold? do you think the standard one offers better heat shielding then? the K&N was in the car when i got it so thats all i have to compare it too. (although the guy still has the original & im trying to get it off him). i was going to see if i could mount the bmc somewhere in the space to the right of the engine and route the cold air feed another way, to aviod it being above the manifold, what do you guys recon?
what do you have in yours silky? standard box with uprated filter/cold air feed? any pics? cheers

BMC or not, if you don't have a good cold air feed then your wasting your time

Yeh I was referring to where the airbox is postioned.
I'm running the standard airbox at the moment. I'll be doing the cold air feed pretty soon but not got round to doing it yet because of uni work.

You don't see any power increase after fitting a BMC... well, maybe 1hp? Its more for the noise than anything else and the fact that it provides you with an opportunity to improve the cold air feed to be better than the standard equipment.
I think it was olop_chris who fitted a BMC, then removed and sold it and modified his airbox with a K&N panel filter and a custom cold air feed - removing the standard air feed - then after a few months bought another BMC because he missed the noise!

i keep wondering to myself if its worth spending 150quid on it, to be honest its a bloodly lot of money in my eyes
i dono wat to do wud be nice for a roar lol :p

Yeh BMC is alot to do with the noise more than anything.
Here's mine, (its alot smarter now, the piping looks a little bent on this pic)
IIRC kam_racing does the total kit for £160, then use Mouse's Guide for the cold air feed

umh, ill have to get one i fink, (once u buy it thats it, just think to my self i dnt smoke, so spend it on better fings lol)
how easy is it to fit tim?

Easy mate, took me about half an hour to fit and attach the cold air feed.
Just make sure you've got everything with you and know what your doing, its not hard

is there a fitting guide on here?

umm... I'm not sure, there's Mouse's cold air feed guide, aside form that all you have to do is
Take off the OEM airbox, top and bottom
Connect the 90% pipe to the throttle body and the BMC
Connect the BMC to the top of the engine, using any available screw, using the metal bracket you get given
Attach the oil filter to the pipe that comes off the airbox
Attach the cold air feed to the BMC
Make sure all joints are tightly attched using jubilee clips
I think thats everything
