TIMNG BELT BAD NEWS

RIGHT EITHER THE BELT HAS SNAPPED OR THE TENISOR HAS BROKE,

WAS AT THE LIGHT AND THE CAR CUT OUT, WENT TO THE BONNET AND CHECKED THE LEADS, SPARK ETC, THEN CHECK THE BELT AND NOTICED THAT THE BELT HAD MOVED.

GOT MY FRINED TO TURN THE CAR OVER AND THE TOP HALF OF THE ENGINE WASNT MOVING.

TOWED THE CAR HOME, BROUGHT A NEW TIMING BELT KIT, £89

JUST WOUNDERING IS IT LIKELY THAT I HAVE BEND SOME VALVES.

NOT REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO DO THIS.

COULD ANY1 TELL ME HOW LONG THIS WILL TAKE AS I KNOW THAT I'M DOING BUT JUST WANT A ROUGH TIME.

O YEA ALSO IS IT A HARD JOB, I KNOW I HAVE TO DROP THE ENGINE TO THE SIDE BUT IS THERE ANYTHINK ELSE I SHOULD KNOW!

STOP SHOUTING....ITS A PAIN IN THE ARSE TO READ IT!


If the belt snapped with the engine running, chances are you have damaged a valve at the very least....

IMHO, I would take the head off and check valve clearances etc before fitting the new kit....

If you dont, and you try running the engine with a damage valve, you could muller your entire engine!

Take the driver's side front wheel off when changing the belts - just makes it easier to get to everything ;)

Sorry to hear about this - the tensioner failed on my car at 51k miles and I managed to get it back home and to the dealership where they replaced the cambelt and all associated parts under warranty :)

If you are changing the belts, it is a good idea to change the water pump at the same time as it saves having to strip everything down again if the water pump fails after fitting the new belts - quite a common issue?

well i took the car apart yesterday,

took the cambelt off, which as lost about 10 teeth, so the timing jumped.

prayed it was just the belt so i change the belt and timed her back up and tryed to start her, but

wow, was the no compression at all, all i could her was the pition going up and down, no sound of compression at all.

so off with the head today!!

just woundering should i leave the inlet on when taking the head off or should i remove it 1st?

what would be the quickest way??

right took the head off and found that 2 valves were bend.

i have now changed them, grinding them in and now have placed the head back on, with new gasket, bolts etc,

but now she dnt want to start.

shes getting fuel, and sprak, but no go.

any idea what this could be?

thinking to do a compression test!

Sounds like a lack of compression - make sure all the gasket is sealed around the whole head to the correct torque settings. If that doesnt fix it, compression test it.

roughly at what mileage do you need to change the timing belt?

i am on 44,000 miles on a 2000 reg (polo mk5 1.4mpi)

Didnt VW recently change the service interval to 30,000 miles for the cambelt?

right, as the car wasnt starting, did a compression test and it came back low as hell, 30-60-30-30

so i took of the rocker bak off, and 1 of the rocker arms wasnt sitting int he right place it must of move when i put the rocker cover back on.

this cause the arm to get stuck and score the cam.

i have now order a new arm and can save the cam but sanding it down abit.

but still not understand y the other 3 piston did fire up.

any sugguestion.
