Question about brake discs

As some people already know I've done the G60 brake conversion. I think I've done about 20k with them now. The other day when it was raining I drove the car about 5 miles and just decided to look at my discs, (don't ask me why because I don't know myself, lol) and I noticed the outer and inner edge were still all orange with rust (about 7mm outer and inner) but the rest of the disc was nice and shiny as brake discs usually are when used. Is there a reason for this? My pads are due to be changed but surely this wouldn't happen? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Could it be because those are the parts where the pad doesn't contact the disc?

I thought the GTI and the G60 use the same pads though? Should I order pads for a G60 next then?

Yeh sounds like where the pads aren't contacting the discs, which calipers are you using? Which ever ones (GTi or G60) I'd purchase those pads

Im using GTI calipers and GTI pads. It's annoying now

the only problem you will have now is that its taking 20k of the surface of the disc so putting the right sized pads in will cause major problems for you.ie the new pad will only brake on the high spots(rusty red bit) of the disc.

Have you checked to see if your discs are warped at all? is it happening to both discs?

Im no expert on brakes having never performed any kind of conversion, but isnt the point of upgrading to a g60 brake set up that the discs are bigger therefore giving you a greater surface area of friction under breaking which makes you stop quicker?
so if you are still using the gti spec pads with the larger g60 discs you are not getting any benefit over the standard gti set up are you?
So yes, it seems that the rusty bits are where there is no contact being made, so the extra part of the disc that you gained when doing the conversion (the bit that is going to give you any benefit over standard) is actually redundant.
I would assume therefore that the g60 pads must be larger? (although i have heard that the g60 and gti callipers are the same apart from the connection for the brake hoses?)
if this is the case then you would need g60 pads with your g60 discs to make use of the whole stopping serface. but as mentioned above it could be a bit dodgy changing them after 20k of braking, as your disc may have the efffect of a step where the surface has not been worn by the pad, so you may get dangerously dodgy braking for a while until the new pads 'bed in' to the uneven surface of your discs.

feel free to correct me if i am wrong on any of this  :)

By being larger the 280mm G60 discs have a greater surface area, so they dissipate heat better, reducing fade.

That is the advantage of the upgrade.

g60 and gti have the same calipers and the same size pads i would say get them checked if there warped!

My brakes don't shudder under braking. But if I brake really really hard at high speeds there is a loud noise coming from the passenger front wheel which Im uncertain about?

What kind of noise?

Like a droning noise. I thought it could be a bearing but a bearing noise is constant

GTI Calipers are the same as G60 Calipers.
GTI Pads are the same as G60 Pads.

The only diffrence is the carriers, as they are deeper to give 280MM discs.
