Is it normal for me to be filling up the reservoir every 4/5 months. The fluid seems to slowly but surely disappear until the warning light comes on.

Any ideas?

I'd check the pipe for holes. In daylight you might even see it spurting out

Look for areas in the engine bay for obvious leaks and work your way back to the point it is leaking from.
