am i able to cut off my aerial so it is about half the length and still receive the same signal, or does that just f**k it up?

would have thought it would have been ok, might loose a bit of signal from time to time. I never put my ariel up.

i need a definate answer you see, because if " it should be ok" was not ok then i need a new aerial. Are you sure? or know anyone who would be?

Half extend your ariel and drive around to see what kind of reception you get. If it is fine, then cut it down if you really want.
I only extend mine a bit and I get perfect reception.

you've done it? Turn the radio on if u get a good enough signal then your OK. I know a MK5 without an ariel on it at all, u can always get a dab one, which replaces the standard ariel with a metal block that sticks on to the wind screen, it's dead small too.

Forgive me for sounding like a tosser, but why don't you just pull it only half way up? Why bother cutting it to bits?

Do you have an aerial like I had on mine when I got it? About 2 1/2 foot long and can't be retracted?
If so, just lose it and get a replacement one from Halfords. They can be left retracted.
Or even better get a beesting - the reception with them is amazing!

oh the irony, i rip into someone for asking dumb questions about aerials and now i have to do the same
i've got a funny buzzing noise interfering with some FM broadcasts of late, suggestive of major EM interference from the ignition (worst at idle, "splatchy", tone goes up and fades slowly as revs climb). last time i ever really noticed this was trying to get AM with the aerial down - nightmare. but this is FM, with the aerial up, and it's only come on in the last week. is it current leakage from cables/plugs/dizzy/coil, a knackered aerial, or what?
might yet have to get a beesting

hmmm, true, i might have fried some small earth connection with my frequent cycle of "run the battery flat - jump start - scoot around keeping the revs over 3000 for an hour"...
gonna be a nightmare to check them all though! hope it's just the aerial cable being loose at the back of the stereo (will have to find my removal tools before i can check that tho!)

try a suppressor from halfords, or just use a resistor on the starter or something, see mateymatey.com its on the left hand side of the homepage I think

On the starter?

It's not really so much of a problem on starting, seeing as the radio blinks off and all til you release the key...
(As I am a lazy arse, I only today got round to checking the oil (needed MORE than a litre to get back close to the top line...) let alone the aerial connector, but then I haven't used the radio much - getting the new tape adaptor was "

" )
