Starting and running problems

My GTI is poorly

Yesterday i went to start the car and there was nothing at the turn of the key. All electrics working but no turnover. Tried it 3 times and it eventually fired up.
10 minutes later i did a short journey and it did the same again.

I was planning on getting it plugged into laptop this morning but got to the garage too late. Used the car a few times today and it fired up ok. But then another time it started to turn over then sputtered and died. Turned the key a few times and it fired up ok.

Next time i tried to start it just turned over but no ignition. On 2nd turn it fired up tho so set off. Went to accellerate in 2nd and it just sputtered and lost power starting to die, then got its life back and ran rough for a few seconds.

I've had the car a few months and i remember the previous owner saying they had new leads fitted due to some misfiring probs.

Thats about as much as i can describe really, just getting a bit concerned to go anywhere now in case it won't start. I got a day off work on Tuesday so will have to get it in for computer diagnostic then.

Anybody got any possible ideas at what i might be looking at?

Forgot to add that there have been a few times where the car has cut out for a split second when driving along. And there was a time that there was a squeeking belt type noise when cold start until warm up.

From searching on here it sounds like it could be down to the alternator. I think this GTI adds to list of duff motors i have bought

Only bought it in January and had to pay for new clutch, front dics and pads, tyres, and now this! I wonder whats next?

I had a similar issue of loss of power, but not totally, also I have had starting problems where sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldnt. Mine were the following if it is any help....

Loss of power intermittently - bad eath connection - only tended to happen when it was raining on motorway driving - 1/2 hour fix at my local trusted garage.

Problems with starting - bad connection at the ignition barrel - fixed by new ignition barrel -

I hope that helps - it may not be the same, but thats what it was with me
