Hi there,

I bought a vw indash cd changer for my vw polo 2003 but it hasnt come with an adapter wire or the shelf needed to fit it in, does anyone know the vw part numbers for the above or where to buy cheap ones from. I have also heard that on some cars the cd changer doesnt light up unless you purchase an aditional loom, is this true? thanks

Hi, the shelf and harness are available from your VW dealer - I will have a look and post the numbers on here tonight. The harness is simply a power plug and socket with the additional lead for the CD illumination - you just unplug the power lead to the radio - plug in the new harness - plug the radio into the other end - plug the extra lead into the CD player.
Unfortunately, when I bought the CD player for my wife's Polo - brand new from German ebay, ie straight from the manufacturer's stock!?! I could not get a harness from VW "not sold on its own - only comes with kit" - so I just replaced all the surface mounted LEDs and wired them back to a new flying lead and spliced them into the radio lighting! When I got another CD player for my Passat, I was a bit wiser and just bought the bits from VW - I got p/n from ebay sellers who's items I had just missed!

So will I need to make my own harness? I seen one on ebay a few days ago for £15.00 but I cant find it anymore.

No, that one on ebay would have been the correct one - I paid about £14 from the VW dealer - sorry but I forgot to check the number last night - I'll post it tonight hopefully. The only thing is that the ebay listed ones can tend to be described incorrectly - so if you know what they look like then you can safely bid for them. One of the big VAG bits sellers -"walker motor sport " or something like that, tends to stock a few - but as usual, once you have the VW p/n if you call your local VW dealer to check the price, I think that with the postage, the VW dealer will work out cheaper. What I was meaning in my previous posting was that the dealers said "can't get it by itself - only comes as part of a kit" seems to have been not true because once you know the VW p/n, its a simple case of asking them to order it in for you - even a VW van center will do this for you as its a common part across the marque.

thanks alot for clearing that up, I think Id rather wait for the part number and buy direct from VW as I dont really know what to buy.....

Yes that's it, VAG p/n 6X0 051 734A and the support shelf thing is 1J0 857 725B.

That is not so good as the Gamma will not be interested in connecting to that one - its the blue, green and yellow connector type you need.

Was that one really a newish VAG CD player?

Its an armrest cd player, you will need an adapter lead, either make it yourself or possibly buy one from here.

As usual things are never as easy as you might imagine - still, this would probably still be cheaper than selling this one on to some poor unsuspecting person and getting the correct one. Was this one advertised as being for vertical use or suitable for in-dash (horizontal) use - I take it that the player suspension system can be altered to allow it to perform okay when mounted horizontally?

It was advertised as indash, I think im going to ask for a refund. If I buy the blue, yellow and green connector cd changer, will I only have to buy the cable I listed above for it to work with my gamma stereo?

Best buy a cd player that has the cable and support plate if possible. The cable supplies illumination to the unit. Some sellers don't realise that the cable and support plate is part of the cd unit, they think the cable is part of the car wiring and cannot be removed.
