Hi there, i find my gear changes to be quite clunky and sometimes stiff, is this a sign that the gearbox is worn, or the fact that i have a heavy clutch, that is getting replaced soon?

A lot of MK5's seem to be the same.
I asked the same question a while back and it could be that your gearbox is worn but the fact is it happens to everyone.

What engine you running?
Higher power engines are more affected I think (due to extra strain on them)

You will get used to it

Maybe some members with more experience with the 6n2 can help him out better....

Thanks for the reply, running 1.4 8v mpi engine, somedays its worse than others :S If i have a new clutch do you think that would help? been quoted £320 fitted, is that reasonable? sorry about the amount of questions.

It's your clutch mate, I've got exactly the same problem on mine. The gearbo generally is a little nothcy though.

£320 is pretty expensive, I'm looking to pay £180-220 for mine

Online for clutches, look at euro parts and GSF

I'm having the same problem as well mate except my clutch has already been changed another problem is the gear shaft selector seal sometimes leaking oil making it harder to switch gears im getting mine sorted out tomorrow hopefully and let you know, is it possible my gearbox coulkd be worn only 1.0 with 51,000 miles?

Update on my car, it now crunches when going into 2nd gear quite often now

replace the clutch and realease bearing and change the oil on the box (put in a fully synthetic mid grade gearbox oil) and u will be fine!
trust me im a vw teck and ive killed 5 boxes on my gti as long as it doesnt wine u should be fine!

some one mentioned the gear selector seal leaking ! well im affriad they all do honnestly ive never seen one that doesnt in fact ive replaced them before and the new one leaks as bad as the old one ! as long as its not leaking badly just a weap then dont worry about it!
just rember 2 check the oil in the box as often as u check the oil in the engine!


rember boys the number one killer of gearboxes is LACK OF OIL!!

It is worth even if u dont feel up 2 checking the oil yourself paying a teck a couple of quid a couple of times a year 2 check your oil level!

i second what bbspolo said, just changed my oil and the slector seal and my gear changes has never been so smooth , best thing i can advise you is to try dropping the oil and changing the seal if it's leaking if it doesn't make a difference then you know the problem not there but you don't have much to lose, if it don't work all in all cost me a £5 i got the gearbox oil from work so but the seal cost £5 if you struggling i can tell you what to do

I amy get my gear selector seal done with the clutch then. Cheap part and easy to fit then?

yep one hour tops, just remember to drain the oil before you remove the seal, and then attack it with a screwdriver should pop out with a bit of force.
Today was drivng along and i lost reverse and 5th gear, managed to get it to the garage i work at just to find the bolt holding the gear linkage is lose so while your under there make sure it tight if you get a lot of freeplay in your gearstick.

Since tighting it, it looks like my first is third and reverse is first and so on, now i noticed a lot of adjusting screw so maybe someone can tell me which is the one im looking for (bbspolo) lool you work at VW so but any help from anyone is appreciated.
