Faulty Lambda probe? Coil pack knackered? Could be one of many things. Can you get it plugged into VAG-COM? Run a diagnostic on your car?

do gti's even have coilpacks??? even if they do you would notice a lack in performance, lumpy idle and some other symptoms.
My bet would be an intermittent lambda fault, most other things would actually show some performance issue
don't panic too much, its an engine emissions / engine check light so can be thrown up by alot of things..
mine intermittently appears every few months or so just to tell me one of my lambdas is unhappy...little f**kers lol, as said by slix get VAGcom on it...only true way to diagnose fault.
Also check your fuses

I've had the same thing lit up on my dash for the past 6 weeks or so, It passed its MOT with the light on (emissions were actually lower than last years MOT when the light wasn't on). Occasionally the light doesnt come on when i start the car up but then lights up after 5 mins or so.
Im sure theres a way to reset it from inside the car, something to do with having the key in a certain postion, drivers window open and holding the tachometer reset? Anyone know the proper procedure?

disconnecting the battery...
there is no way of removing fault codes without VAG-com or resetting by killing the battery
