wiper intermission woes!

Gosh darn it! Just as I get the GTi sorted and everything running super-sweetly: more electrical gremlins! The wipers stop wiping when I pull the screen wash stick towards me, and when I press it down to the slow intermission setting (mist?), they do nothing at all. So to wash and wipe the screen i have to A) get out and grab a cloth and a hose or B), pull the lever and lift it up to the first of the two faster setting simultaneously. No good.
Any idea's where I should start looking for the problem/solution? If it's some faulty connection in the stalk mechanism itself I'm toying with the idea of replacing it with and having installed a cruise control setup, but maybe there's a simpler fix. How's anyone who installed cruise control getting on with it? Do you find you use it much?

...think I heard my central locking pump making funny noises the other day too...!
