at moment my cars a garden ornament after gettin clutch and gearbox reconned i thought id get bumpers smoothed and wheels refurbed while its offroad. however i opened the boot the other day and a nice trickle of water found its way into this small black box with a clear plastic lid just behind the offside rear light. the car had a hissy fit and sounded like it was tryin t lock and now the remote central locking wont work. iv checked fuses but all seem ok. just need to know wot this box is and how much to replace or anything else i need to check?
cheers. dan

that is the central locking pump, it sounds like it is well and truly screwed now unfortunately.

Central Locking pump is around £180 quid from VW plus VAT plus labour. Try and get one off of ebay or a breakers yard.

I had my leaking fuel tank flap valve replaced not long ago.
http://vdub.14.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=726
This leak had cause me unable to central lock/unlock the doors, and every time i try central unlock the door a hissing noise stay for ~20-30 sec.
The presence of this hissing noise probably means that the central lock pump is working and some where around the central locking circuit is leaking.... (mine found to be the leaking fuel tank flap valve, the other likely place is the boot lid/tailgate valve).
Cheers.
