just had my 9n for a week now and a strange bottom end knocking has apeared, it is fairly loud, sounds like there is no oil in the car but they is plenty as it has just had a service before i bought it from the honda delearship - yes honda lol.

whilst checking the oil i had the car running and took of the oil cap and the engine started chugging and the engine management lights came on.

any ideas on what may be wrong.

i bought the car with 3 months warrenty so it will be going back on monday, just wanted an idea on what may be wrong before i take it back.

The engine will have a panic attack if you remove the cap while its running - itll lose oil pressure so thats nothing to worry about.

As for the knocking, not too sure - its possible something isnt tightened up properly somewhere along the line. Take it back to them asap!

As far as I know, Polo engine cannot handle the situation where the engine is running and you open the oil cap. I found this hard way as well. I removed the cap because I though that it was not tight enough and my engine stalled. I asked about this from our local dealer and he said that this is normal for VW engine.

I am not that kind of person who can tell you is it really a feature or not, but I wanted to tell that you're not alone, it seems to be a feature and atleast - my Polo has ran well since that over 10 000 kilometers..

Knocking sound - Yes... I have had it too. It sounds like diesel engine or petrol with no oil... Been there. Works perfectly anyway.

I got it little bit better after my EGR took last breath of gases and blown to pieces. With new EGR it was little bit better and my idle RPM was stable. Nowadays idle is bad again and I am just waiting when my EGR explodes again.

VW Dealer: "EGR is blown? Thats new. I have never heard of this kind of situation. EGR is hardly never replaced to 9N models... "

Twice. Before I "kindly" asked them to look for the real reason instead fixing the damage. VW dealer could not find the problem but our local car repairer found broken MAF instantly and replaced that. Connection between those two parts is too high-knowledge for me, but I think that there is a connection and now everything works fine.

No. I didn't have to pay that second EGR unit.
