Does the waterpump need changing when cambelt gets changed?

Hello all, just after a bit of advice. I'm just getting ready for a journey down to the south of france so I thought now was a good time to get the cam belt changed. My polo is a 51 plate (2001) and has 52k on the clock. The mechanic said he thinks the water pump needs changing on vw's round about 60k so it's a good idea to get it done at the same time. Is this right or shall do you think I should just leave it??

Thanks in advance

Do you think? When i spoke to him tonight he didn't even sound sure himself whether it needed doing, i think he said that the bearings got wore down his sons golf but I've never heard anyone mention anything about water pumps on here

You want to be getting the cambelt, tensioners and water pump done at the same time mate.

As you are already changing the cambelt, why not change the water pump & tensioners, as its false economy if you don't. Your mechanic will be able to access the pump so easily when its all stripped down, whats the point in not doing it!
Go for it, do it all. Especially with your trip onto the continent imminent!

Definitely get it done mate, it's very popular to get all three done at the same time for very good reasons. I need to do this as soon as funds permit.

Thanks for all the advice! got it changed and didn't cost me that much extra, the bloke showed it me afterwards and it didn't look in very good shape so was well worth doing!!

The main reason for getting the water pump changed at the same time as a cambelt job, is that when everything is reassembled the original water pump has a tendency to break, so everything has to come all back apart again to replace the water pump and this costs you another 4hrs labour
