Boot open warning light/leaking rear washer

This morning as I was driving to work I had the boot open warning light appear on the dash of my GTI. Got out, opened and closed the boot, still the same. Searched on here while I was at work and found a few threads with the same problem.

Parked at home after work and as I ran in to get a torx screw driver the alarm went off. Removed the inside of the boot, which I could feel was wet. Could see the washer pipe was slightly off and was leaking.

I've unplugged the boot sensor and the light on the dash has gone. The alarm has also stopped going off.

Anyways, my question is can I leave this sensor unplugged? When I plug it back in the light re-appears. Have sprayed WD40 on the sensor/plug, still no good. Also, could the sensor eventually dry out and work again?

Cheers

-Miles.

Yeh if I were you mate I'd just leave it for a couple of days and see what it's like then.

In the mean time make sure the fluid pipe is secure and leak free. They're way too much hassle for me I just got rid of mine!

First time my washer pipe leaked it knackered the switch and I got a new one.

Second time the same thing happened but I used some WD40 and its been fine ever since

See this alot on cars at work after they are a few years old, when the washer pipe pops off, when you use the washer the water fills the boot catch with water and corrodes the micro switch contacts causing the warning light to come on becaese it looses its contact from the micro switch and also beacuse of that it thinks the tailgate is open which is why the alarm keeps going off. only fix is a new catch

the above is true and its caused by 2 reasons!
first is ppl not using any screen wash its alcohole based so stops the water in the pipes freasing! when it freezes water expands and has 2 escape so it pops of the connectors!

second is the connector its self! its just a bad design vw have now changed them (on new polos and golfs etc) the easest suliotion what we do is cut of the connector off then just connect the pipe 2 the washer motor with a juberly clip! there is loads of pipe so dont worry about it not reaching!

hope this helps

Well I've left the sensor unplugged and had no problems. Added a jubilee clip to the washer pipe like people have recommended.

Had the neighbours come round last night and tell me that the alarm kept going off the night before...ooops. Doesn't go off now the sensor is unplugged.

Only problem now is the light in the boot doesn't come on - no bigge to me. The alarm will still function though right?

Faulty switch also triggered my alarm in the past

I've just had this problem. Was only looking for the boot sensor issue, it did not occur to me that the rear window washer not working was part of the same problem... the coin dropped when I found this thread though :)

Boot sensor is now unplugged and pipe is reconnected (should stop the alarm going off all the time, bet my neighbours love me now). Hopefully the sensor isn't knackered and will be ok when it dries out.

Just passing on my thanks to the solution to this issue ;)

LOL, glad I could help.

Just to let you know, I replugged the switch on mine a few weeks later and it worked fine.

My one is totally screwed now as I glued on the hose pipe, worked fine for a few months then just stopped working. I ended up snapping it anyway when I took off my rear wiper. I'll have to get it replaced when I come to sell the car
