Camshaft sprocket

Hi all....

Just doing a head gasket on my old 1.05 '93 polo and having real trouble removing the camshaft sprocket... Made myself a pulley holding tool, just as haynes mentions but the thing won't budge....!!

Is the bolt a right hand thread, ie. turn anti-clockwise to loosen? don't wanna be shearing the fecker off!!!!

Also, is it easier to leave the carb on adn remove it with the head, haynes states to remove before but it looks easier to leave alone?

Any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers

its a normal thread bolt...so anticlockwise to loosen

i leave the manifolds, carb and dizzy on...can be left on if its a simple gasket swap or easier to dismantle once off the car

you might need a helper to lift it all off...its reasonbly heavy

cheers stevo,

finally removed the bolt, think a proper holding tool would've been easier, but at 65 quid glad i used my own!!
left them all on, much easier... Now removing the crank pulley was a b***h, not enough room to slide it past the crank bolt and inner side wall, crap design!!! to lever the engine to the side with a huge 2x4...!!!!

Right, finally got it all back together after a week in between all the rain storms... gotta luv the british summer!!!! anyhow, all seems fine timing wise, however am getting a squeal that increases with the revs. Coudl this be the water pump if the timing belt is too tight?
cheers

yeah could well be the pump ..it will kill the pump bearings in no time if its too tight

its common practice to fit a new pump when you do the belt...as if it siezes up the belt will come off
