Gearbox sensor isn't connected. A garage did this to me. Took me a mile to notice I wasn't getting a speedo reading lol

Mouse - did this stop your rev meter and petrol and temp from working, or was it just the speedo?

Revs still worked. My petrol guage worked then dropped for 10 seconds then went back up

i dont think mines the gearbox sensor then

as nothing at all works, no guage what so ever, they dont even illuminate, apparently its a common faault on passats and audi's, is this true?

It sounds like its come unplugged behind. Take the clocks out and check all the plugs are firmly in place. Its a fairly simple task too. If you have a haynes manual its all documented, otherwise let me know and ill email the elsa procedure.

thanks for the help Alex, but its all sorted now
had the electrician of the garage come down who has his own company to come and have a look
and all it required was for the dash to be stripped untill the circuit board was out, and needed a reset. all workin now
happy it wasnt such a expensive fix after forking out for gearbox rebuild
