So...my car went into VW yesterday to have the cambelt, tensioners & water pump etc all replaced, along with having the aircon serviced.

Anyway, got about 3 minutes from home and the EPC light came on, and as it turns out the brake lights aren't working. Called out the AA who said it was a faulty brake light switch. He managed to fix it for the short term, but said it will need to be replaced. I asked how easy it would be to change, he said it would take him about 20 mins, but for someone like me, it would be a difficult job. He thought a garage would charge about £70 for it to be replaced.

Now I REALLY don't want to fork out more money to VW after handing over all the money I did for a cambelt change. So how easy is this to change? Could a muggins like me, who has little car knowledge do this? If anyone could post a guide and pics that would be great.

ANY help would be apprechiated.

Just phoned VW who want £8 for the switch and £80 to fit it

I'm sure it cant be that hard to fit surely

Open the glove box press the legs in so you can open the box fully up, pull the glove box out from the bottom to release it from it's lower hinge.

unscrew the drivers footwell (2 cross head screws) remove

release the clips either side of the fusebox..but don't disconnect anything.

This should now give you full access to the pedal assembly.

The switch is a bayonnet fit and turns 90 to take out, above the brake pedal, you might have to depress the pedal to refit..

Total time 20 mins, one cross head screwdriver and two cups of tea...and they wanted to charge £80 i'm in the wrong job..

ok its easy to do i done it on mine all you need to do is take the panel off above the pedals and on the brake pedal you will see a small block take the wires off and pull it out then put new 1 in and connect wires back up job done took me 15 mins and eurocarparts keep the switch instock and will cost 9quid when i done mine

its really easy mate vw charge stupid money for everthing they do and all they will do is give it to the new boy in the garage who knows F**k all bout cars as its too technical for the master techs lol

hi, i am also replacing this part with my laptop on the garage. *talk about express fix* i thought that it would be hard and since this VW was left for my care (for a week) i must say that i am doing a good job. thanks for the information here.
