rite iv ham my gti for a year and a haf now and stil dont understend how to work the climatronic thing!!

do u use econ and auto? or just hav it blowin in set directions?
wen its on low is that cold air con or just as cold as it wil get?

as I understand it, the air con is off when Econ is displayed so it works just like a normal heater

when i put it on auto i can feel the ac pump start (when the car's idling)

the low setting is for maximum cooling (ie all the time) when the ac is on, otherwise it just takes air at ambient temperature

think thats how it works!

(i havent used my car in hot weather yet so I dont use the ac apart from clearing condensation at the moment)

I leave mine on Auto 18*C in the summer, unless it's really cold when I set it on LO.

In the winter, I have it on Auto 22*C, and HI when I first get in the car in the morning.

ECON turns the air con off.

so in auto does this use more fuel?

is it just me that dont understand?

Last summer I tried running a full tank of fuel with it on ECON, and I used exactly the same amount of fuel as if it's on AUTO.

I just leave it on AUTO throughout the year.

It's not like other cars where if you turn the air con off you can kiss goodbye to performance, there isn't any noticable difference in performance with Climatronic on or off on our cars.

I notice no difference in fuel economy with the climatronic on or off. Acceleration is a bit slower though.

With climate control on the the display will show 'auto'. This means the climatronic will monitor the cabin temp and humidity and switch the air con on and off as needed, adjust where the air is distributed to and adjust the temp of the blower to keep the cabin at the temp you select (say 18c).

If you press one of the buttons for the air distribution such as the windscreen demist, auto will disappear from the display. This is the ordinary air con switched on, where all the settings such as temp and blower speed remain as you set them.

If you press the 'econ' button the air con is switched off and everything works like a normal heater.

my climatronic doesn't seem to get the cabin cold even on LO setting... had a new compressor fitted a couple of months ago (under warranty thankfully) but doesn't seem to have helped... just feels like it is blowing out ambient temp air... it did work once from what I remember a few weeks ago but not since

It's just blowing out ambient air now.

I've had quotes ranging from £49 - £85 plus vat for a refill of the gas, with pressure and electrical tests.

You might have a leak mate.

Climatronic only works as well as you use it.

If you set it at 18*C without 'Auto' on. It'll only blow out air at that temperature. So, on a hot day the temperature inside the cabin is going to be much higher than you think it is (say 20*C-22*C)

The purpose of Auto is to keep the cabin at a certain temperature. So if you select 20*C with auto on a hot day, then the air con uses the interior sensors to keep the WHOLE cabin at that temperature, which is why you usually get a burst of air when selecting Auto. Sorry if people already knew that

ECON is a useless button on Climate control now, its something thats been brought over from early 90's cars (where the mpg/performance was so bad with air con that they litterally HAD to offer it). With a big(gish) and powerful engine like the GTi you probably wouldn't notice the difference in fuel consumption.

yea I asked VW in London about an air con service and they said it shouldn't need it, but is booked back in for them to have a look at in couple of weeks... was told by VW dealer I bought car from (an establishment in dorset) that they re-gassed and fixed a broken seal as welll as fitting new compressor, but I take that with pinch of salt... do not trust them at all as everything they were supposed to sort out they haven't!

never going back there.

but summer is coming and I want my air con working!! sunroof open just aint the same!

car in garage, they have said that the clutch mechanism inside the compressor is faulty and they are waiting to hear whether warranty will pay for the work... should do as "apparanntly" I had new compressor fitted so this should have 12 months warranty anyway... still waiting though

you can also get ur speed throug it.....pres the fandown/cold and econ button and you can enter the diagnostig values....mnow use the arrows to switch "channel".....on 16 you will find ur speed....as well as many different tempratures/engine rpm....and more.....

Great - do you have info about all 60 points? What do they present?

So, when you turn on the engine, what is the heating/AC doing when ECON or AUTO is not ON? It is possible to have it running as say 20degC and neither to be selected, yet it seems to still be pushing out cooled air at 20degC - this is noted. Any ideas?
